Literally a sociopath: Ayn Rand, in her notebooks, worshiped a notorious serial murderer-dismemberer, and used this killer as an early model for the type of “ideal man” that Rand promoted in her more famous books — ideas which were later picked up on and put into play by major right-wing figures of the past half decade, including the key architects of America’s most recent economic catastrophe — former Fed Chair Alan Greenspan and SEC Commissioner Chris Cox — along with other notable right-wing Republicans such as Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas, Rush Limbaugh, and South Carolina Gov. Mark Sanford. The loudest of all the Republicans, right-wing attack-dog pundits and the Teabagger mobs fighting to kill health care reform and eviscerate “entitlement programs” increasingly hold up Ayn Rand as their guru. Sales of her books have soared in the past couple of years; one poll ranked “Atlas Shrugged” as the second most influential book of the 20th century, after The Bible.

What a crock of dribble-jiss this article is. Well below ZGeeks normal standards.
The author Mark is obviously desperate to try and be sensationally controversial.
He obviously has not read “Atlas shrugged” or the Fountainhead either. Both books are more about the pursuit of excellence and the socialist state taken to its penultimate conclusion.
Extrapolation of Rands fascination with Hickman to make her appear to condone his actions is drawing a very long bow. She obviously was fascinated with Hickmans idea of self “Other people do not exist for him, and he does not see why they should,”.
What Rand found interesting, was Hickmans idea that he had “no regard whatsoever for all that society holds sacred, and with a consciousness all his own. He has the true, innate psychology of a Superman. He can never realize and feel ‘other people.’”
This intensely focused person was what intrigued Rand rather than the brutal dismemberment of a child as Mark the articles author is postulating.
If you have a spare day or six read Atlas shrugged and look at our society today. Then make up your own mind.

I can understand her appeal, but she is far to zealous in her views. SHe is a republicans wank fest. Her views are based solely on a narrow set of experiences which she had to overcome by leaving russia. She could not see the struggles that other people face coming from different backgrounds than hers. She was far too myopic to have any real understand of everything to bring about a philiospohy which was beneficia and practicall to more people. She should have dabbled in more things before setting down to get it all out there. She was a nut bag.
I couldn’t agree with you more about her writings.
On the plus side her books were interesting to read, with Atlas Shrugged rambling a little and feeling very self indulgent at times and Fountain Head a tightly written story appearing to draw inspiration from the architecture of Frank Lloyd Wright.
