While the exact scenario and location remain secret, about 200 tickets have already been snapped up for Patient 0, which will pit teams of six people equipped with laser guns against hungry zombies in a do-or-die battle. The setting will be a multi-storey building refashioned as a secret medical research lab where, apparently, an experiment goes a little haywire.
Leadbetter said at least 40 actors would be hired for the production, although the group has also been inundated with interest from zombie enthusiasts willing to volunteer their time to get in on the action.
A Melbourne gunsmith has been hired to make the guns – laser guns modelled to look and feel like assault rifles – so participants can take on the role of members of a “crack Special Forces team” sent to rid Melbourne 2012 of the zombie scourge.
“It’s not just a shooting game,” said Leadbetter. “It’s not just running around mindlessly shooting like in paintball … There’s a deep back story that our players will be immersed into from the moment they purchase their tickets.”
