Symantec are bastards
A topic for discussion my fellow geeks. A few days ago my work bought Symantec Ghost Solution Suite 2.5 Enterprise System Builder. But it doesn’t work. We need to image a bunch of Dell E6410 laptops and this software just won’t work. It is documented on the Symantec site as a fault with their software and have released a patch to fix it. But it’s not available via the liveupdate and it’s not on their site for download.
I have rung technical support. I’ve asked if could have a link to the patch so I can download it. And they won’t give it to me. Why? Because I have to purchase technical support.
So, I’ve got here software that doesn’t work with new computers. I do my own research and find the fix (it wasn’t that hard, thank you Google). And they want to charge me extra to fix their faulty software. Is this fair? Or is this a complete and utter rip off? What do you think?

I bought a laptop a while ago. When I purchased it, the sales wench asked me if I’d like to purchase Norton Antivirus for the thing for a modest fee. She looked somewhat hurt when I doubled over laughing.
lolsymantec
They belong in the same group as Adobe when it comes to quality of software and bafflement that people still purchase from them.
Symantec. The only thing they haven’t ruined is Enterprise Vault and Netbackup.
I’d check with the ACCC or the CTTT if I were you, you probably have a case.
If it’s a known bug in the software, and there is a known fix, deliberately withholding the fix for that bug from people who have already purchased the software until you pay an additional fee sounds mighty questionable to me. This isn’t an additional feature they’re selling, this is a fix for functionality you’re already purchased.
This. They have sold you a product that is not of merchantable quality and they have admitted as much.
Fair trading would be very interested in hearing about his.
Well I might just have to do that
Who give’s a fuck unless it’s your money your paying for it with.
In order for evil to win, all it takes is for good people to allow it to do so and do nothing to stop it.
No, Evil triumphs because it’s better. And the “good” are all fucking pussies.
Incorrect. Evil will always triumph, because Good is dumb.
Probably cause he gives a fuck about his continued employment and has management that expect software that they purchased to work as expected as part of his kpi.
They don’t have a compulsory maintenance period with the purchase of the software? That is odd.
You should be entitled to all fixes for the software you purchased at time of purchase as that is how it was sold to you anyway.
Fuck em right in their asses and dont offer a reach-around.
Call ACA and Today Tonight. Get 10 stories on there and you get a free one.
They won’t touch this story. You’re just too damn ethnic looking.
It’s how they work. We buy heaps of Backup Exec and Net Backup agents at work. So we get quotes. and the quotes come in the form of:
* Agent
* 12 month Support for above Agent
* Part of 12 month support to take it up to the end of next year.
I’ve tried to just buy the product, but they won’t let me. So I’ve asked them to include all the costs together – they can’t do that either. I’ve tried to just buy support for the partial year – can’t do that either…
Dumb Arses.
My Internet provider called me a few weeks ago and offered 12 months of Norton for free, I had the same reaction.
Why do you buy Backup Exec and Netbackup? There’s a migration path from Backup Exec to Netbackup without a catalog loss…
Or are you stuck on heaps old versions?
windows 7 automatic install kit.. for free
sure you have to mess with it and make image after image before you get one that works as you want it, but its free.. and fuck symantec
or MDT2010
I’ve heard good things about http://clonezilla.org/ but never used it myself.
Or you could just install OS X and not have to worry about viruses :sheep:
Once you’ve got AIDS, there’s no sense in worrying further.
Please tell me that you are kidding?
Or are you one of those Mac cult people who actually think that is the case??

I always assumed Mac people were just ignorant now I see that they are indeed ignorant and stupid as well.
‘Oh look at me, I have a Mac and cant get a virus!’ Yes…..
I tried Symantec’s ‘version’ of ghost yesterday, it’s utter worthless crap! It simply doesnt work properly. Lucky it was a pirate version! And before any do-gooders go on abou that, I have a purchased version I still use , back from the pre Symantec days, when ghost was actually good and worked from a 1.44mb floppy!
Well. It took a few more calls, threats of fair trading and finally I got somewhere and they emailed me the patch this morning. Also one person told me I have 12 months technical support since I bought the product. Mind you, two people there told me I didn’t and refused to help me unless I paid.
It looks like the only way to get support from these guys is to post on their forums.
Really goes to show how incompetent Symantec are.
Oh and it still doesn’t fucking work.
look at the site you are on. evil has already triumphed.
That’s interesting. I’ve done it for a few issues with companies recently and it gets an almost instant response. They go into bad publicity damage control. “Oh my god my pretty facebook page says bad things oh no oh no!”
So I’m thinking that using the phone to get help is just not feasible any more.
I did some work at a place recently that use FOG and swear by it. I have no idea how effective it is since I don’t do imaging etc on a regular basis.
lol enterprise vault maybe great if your enterprise consists of 10 clients, is like to see a real organisation all build virtual vaults at once. dont even get me started on 2010 support.
Symantec ghost has been effectively “end of life”d anyway, via a management decision.
The other year they closed down the New Zealand office, sacked all the ghost developers and offshored the development. I don’t even think they were smart enough to organize a proper handover of the code, since they sacked all the developers and escorted them from the building.
Its probably getting developed in india now, so good luck waiting for any bug fixes or new features
