SHOE STRING START UP NAMED TOP 25 AUSTRALIAN INNOVATIONS
A sydney based $500 business start up has been named in the top 25 of Anthill Magazine’s smartest 100 business innovations.
Anthillʼs ʻSMART 100′ Index was developed in 2008 to identify and rank Australiaʼs 100 most innovative products, proving to be one of the largest surveys of its kind in Australia.
Coming in at 24th, AutoCarLog was started with a budget of $500 and in just seven days by Sydney based entrepreneur Sebastien Eckersley-Maslin. The 28 year old ex-Navy engineer spent just $498.50 and seven “sleepless days” launching the business to dispel the myth that it takes a lot of time and money to start a business.
In a unique level of openness, Eckersley-Maslin further meticulously detailed every aspect of the start-up process in a seven day blog series which were further published in business Magazines around the world.
Other top innovations named in the top 25 include the joint Volvo/ANU project “DSS” which automatically detects driver fatigue, AdVax (TM) a leading ingredient in vaccines around the world and the Geomite Biomineral chemical fertiliser replacement.
Brisbane based R&D online Tax consultancy firm took out the number one spot.
The business, AutoCarLog, is an automatic vehicle mileage logbook which allows car logbooks to be updated with any mobile phone using SMS.

In all seriousness, AutoCarLog was a project of mine I started earlier this year on a budget of $500 and in just seven days to prove it could be done. (just) My rather ambitious aim is to go for a $1million valuation in 12months so I can proclaim “$500 to $1m in 12 months”, ambitious but achievable. Fingers crossed on that one!
