I miss the camaraderie of mini drivers.... It seemed that every time I pulled up beside another mini, the driver would wave, and I'd wave back.... Took me a while to get out of the habit when I finally got rid of the mini. People must have been thinking "Who's that knob waving at me"

Well, at the moment i'm driving a 199? Hyundai Excel (imp keeps reminding me it's a hairdresser's car). My excuse is that it's a company car so i don't get too much choice in the matter.
That'll stay until my 2001 Falcon Wagon gets handed over in a couple of weeks, then i get a month in that before my 2004 Commodore Wagon arrives.
At home there's my car - a 1997 Subaru Impreza RX (First car i've ever owned) that only comes out on weekends late at night when i feel like screaming around the streets of sydney :)

toyota corolla 1987 model...
before that was the
nissan pulsar 1987 model
which he also wrote off...
before that was the
Ford Laser 1989 model
which was stolen and burnt out...
and before that was my baby...
Datsun 180B 1975 model, with only 130,000 on the clock (no it hadnt rounded the clock either)
I loved that car... until it got too expensive to fix than to buy a new car....

Ya spot on. Thats the way its going to stay as well. Its quick enough as it is, i dont want some huge power monster that only goes well in a straight line.
Hugs the corners beautifully , in the 2 1/2 years i've owned it, i've lost control once and that was in the first month.
Still miss my escort though, she was a beauty, so much character and a 2 1/2 inch ingle box exhaust on it, had a sound that i have yet to hear again :D

Yeah, she definately is a great handling car, round a sharp corner at way over the speed limit, off the gas, back end steps out a tad back on the gas and nice drift happening.
The eskie was a 78 MK2 2L pinto, i bought another 2L head for the valves and rockers and it cam with a stage 2 cam. Didn't port or polish, but stucka carbie on from a 4.1L cortina and she hollered like a banshee
Yeah, if i was gonna buy another escort, it'd be a Mk1 with a 2L (preferable Lotus twin cam or cossie YB lump twin 45's ohhhhh yeah) Big flared bubble arches ala rally spec, or if i could get my hands on one. A genuine Mk1 Mexico. :drools:

Yeah, as I said, I love my car. Im looking into supercharging it, but I think that just transplanting a brand new 5.7 ltr into it is about the same price, priced at roughtly $6.5k you can get a new genIII 5.7 engine with 245Kw and then i might supercharge that, but that is in the distant future.

tidy work, the mini handles in a similar fashion... although there is a LOT of understeer built in... but coil overs should fix that

Obviously with the bigger engine im gonna need a ruggid gearbox and some hardcore breaks, it's a long way off though... even for the engine mod, but Im content with the V6 in it at the moment!. but it only produces 145kw's and id like to be getting atleast 200kw's out of the 3.8 ltr v6. meh, I still love the big beasty bastard... Doesn't lose too badly to my car? True, when I'm sitting behind you a gear higher than I should be, on no throttle, enjoying watching Dumhed demonstrate really nice cornering technique.
Mind you, it was even more funny that night we went up Putty Road and the four of us pulled away from the rest of the pack (of mainly turbocharged cars).

I’m guessing that’s the Astra Turbo? Cause we used to cream the SRi's when we did 'Enthusiasts Drive Days' :p
The new GTi 180 should give the turbo a run for its money now.
That's the rounded back one isn't it, still RWD, the Van version of those is good too (they made them up until 1986 and with a 1.5 I think) lots of them end up with rotors in 'em ;)
Don’t know if it was the van version- twas a 3dr station wagon like thingy, only saw a hand-full like it around. But RWD and ultra light was a fun combo for a cheap car

GO THE COMMODORE: oh yeah, it's a VT 2000 model 3.8 ltr V6 turbine mica executive series II.
I'm telling ya man, it's the way Aussie like the cars geared, a fairly tall Idle for the size of the engine and a low diff ratio make for really good step off, drive something like a volvo or audi with the same power/size engine and you'll be amazed at the crappy launchin' ability.
Go the GenIII, TH700 gearbox and dBA vented discs with four spots, with coil overs and konis and sway bars nothing will TOUCH it.

RS2000 is White in colour. Not in original spec due to performance mods. However all the bits required to make it original are packaged and in my garage.
Mini is Yellow..... looked better in the brochure than in real life, none too happy with it to be honest. Am thinking about getting the JCW upgrades to the car, just trying to work out the cost against my total lack of funds.

Do Koni only make front or rear dampers? Or do they only make good dampers for one end of the car, forcing you to put coil overs from some other brand in the other end?

I think what he ment was that you can get certain models of shock absorber designed for coilover application but come without springs, just spring seats, you may for example choose to put say maybe a Pedders spring on it.
Also some springs that come without shocks are by their dimensions clearly design to be used on a coilover shockabsorber, this could also be what he meant.
The term "Coilover" doesn't always refer to the complete unit, a spring in itself or a shock in itself(if it has spring seats on it) are also often covered by the term.

dunno, as I understand it "coil over" describes the type of spring set up and the koni shock absorbers sit inside the coil over 'springs' I could be wrong, but thats how I understand it.

Anyway, I was just being pedantic. The sound of the line smacked really badly of "MoTeC exhaust", hence why I thought I'd draw it out.

"MoTec exhaust" mha ha ha Gold, everyone knows that APEXI makes the best exhausts... hang on... I think they actually DO make exhausts!
it's cool, I'm not claiming to be an expert, just interested in what everyone has for a ride ;) and commenting when people post to get more info and suss it all out.

Sirion, "it's the buttons baby!" good bang for buck factor I reckon! as fast as a swift GTi right? VVti technology in such a cheap car, awesome.
The Cressidas from the late 80's early ninetys have always appealed to me ay. and I think a supra twin turbo swap is popular right? I've forgotten the name of the motor? they are 24 valve jobbie from memory.

1.9l, that's not very common, most manufacturers will normally badge it as a 2.0, Was it by any chance a Puegout 205? that had a 1.9litre engine & badged it as a 1.9.

No, the manufacturer badged it as a 1.8L because it had more branding, apparently.
They badged their 2.2L as a 2.0L engine for the same reason, their 2.5L as a 2.3L, their 4.4L V8 as a 4.0L, and their 5.4L V12 as a 5.0L.
This is what happens when you let the tools in marketing start taking over from a naming convention started by the people who weren't fucked in the head, namely the engineers.

Get it shipped and then fit it myself.
Or
Suspension = WA suspension (Fremantle)
Exhaust = Perth Exhaust (albany highway)
Performance parts = Rockingham Performance (Rockingham)
Body work = Fibrevision
Also to St. Anger, not every P plater lives off their parents, I live alone and have quite a nice paying job which gets me all these things. Thanks for assuming the worst though. Just remember not all of us fail to make a good living. :p

Yeah sorry. But i live in an area where kids do live off their parents and get Audis and Beamers for their 18th birthday and it shits me. Not because i'm jealous, but because they fly down my street and try and kill me while i'm on my push bike, and show no respect for their fine set of wheels.
And also personally i think you should always start off with a bomb of a car whilst on P's. Because wouldn't it suck if you fucked your car big time. And also, who can afford to pay for insurance when your so inexperienced and have nice car.
BTW my 1st car was a VK i got when i was 17, i am now 20 and have now owned a 99 Magna for 6 months. And i struggle with the insurance on that thing. Also i have only had one prang and that was in my mums patrol. Doh.

I had kids at my school who got a beemer 318 for their 16th. And worse - a girl in the sister/brother school to mine who got an MG. British racing green - didn't like the colour so daddy painted it red.

My first car - 84 falcon pov pack. No power steering, 3.3litre cream exteior. The only "feature" it had was an auto with 3 on the floor.
1. Fuck kids don't know the brilliance of power steering.
2. I wish I'd had a manual. I can't drive em. Clutch what? I know go and stop. The rest is foreign to me. I should have learnt, but I never had a manual car to learn in. I'm too old to do it now (read proud). Pussy - yeah. Thank god for 8 cylinders.

Fuck me... You're either a bad pick or I sound old! First car an 84 Falcon and I'm, whinging about it - hm.. Probably picked it up at the age of.... 18. Sorry - I'm 28. 35-42? Shit me... That scares me muchly.
I've gotta say tho, I was talking about Mazda Bongo vans today. The better half had never seen one - strange that that seeing they were rear engined and two stroke. What do i see on Punt Road (near the MCG in melb) 10 minutes later? A f'n Bongo with mags.. fantastic!

Just about any of the sub $20k Hatch backs should be ideal, that's if you want something new or recent, If you're going for an old car then Datsun 120Y's & Carolla KE70s are the kind of thing you'de be after.
what's your budget?
prefer sedan? hatch? 2 door? 12 door?

coupe is like the fancy version of a sedan, meant to be more streamline and sporty.....kinda like a meld between sedan and hatchback, nothing to big.
Mini cooper is a small arse car....dont get one unless you want to get back problems in later life
speedo = thing tells you how fast your going
If your looking for a reliable car that'll never break down go for a 90's onwards model toyota corolla, i got a '93 and it just goes and goes and goes....
edit: also its easy to find non-genuine replacement parts for toyotas and they're dirt cheap.....should you happen to prang it

I don't really get "in to" cars like some people do, but...
My first car was 1979 Honda Accord. The same car that Superintendent Chalmers drives! The glove box couldn’t close, my mate finally got sick of that and taped it shut. You had to put on high beams with by pressing a button with your foot that was hidden behind the clutch. The bumper sticker read “This is not an abandoned car.” This car was a tank and finally died when I went to put my foot on the break to take a corner and nothing happened.
Second car was another second hand dealership deal. It was a Daihatsu Charde POS. Was great for a young teen. Always empty beer bottles in the back seat.
I now own my first new car, a 2001 Holden Astra CD Sedan It's dirty and needs petrol. TISM is in the CD player and I love it.
Next car is going to have HSV on it.

Have you ever driven one??? They are like driving a go cart! I am about to re-spray (light blue metalic or perl) Redo interior. I was going to put a 660cc turbo engine in it but a mate is doing that at the moment and it is a major pain in the arse! Thinking about getting someone to build me a tough little normally aspirated engine (800cc-1L). Lowered with mags. Will be kool. Then Ill start on my Mini-Monster Truck. Mwa mwa mwa mwa mwa!
I finally got some pictures of my Acura Legend...here they are.

Nice Bimmer Benzo
Aww, thanks, I like it :)
I have to confess it's only a 318i (a 1999, the first of the E46's, if you're interested), but it has a few upgrades, including the sports package and the 18" wheels, which makes it a damn fine car to drive, although by no means the fastest car on the block. Every time I drive another car I'm reminded just how good it is - I wish I could afford to drive an M3, they must be awesome.
In any case, it was a nice change from my previous cars:
1995 1.6L Ford Escort
1990 1.8L Toyota Corona
1983 Mazda 323
1981 Mitsubishi Mirage
scathing

That depends on your perspective, of course.
I've driven an E46 318i Series I long-term (but without your rim / suspension package) and its an underwhelming drive.
I will admit that the chassis poise is competent and steering response is quite direct, and I suppose with better tyres and suspension it would cure the "soft spring and matched, but soft, dampers with small rim" handling I found with the vehicle. In its standard form, though, the car just feels faster than it is because its leaning so much into corners.
While I don't expect it to burn the quarter mile up, the engine is so woefully inadequate for the mass (especially with the automatic slushbox) that it becomes frustrating. Getting beaten by people in 80's Corollas is just plain embarassing.
For a company that claims it's about "sheer driving pleasure", the fact that you can't make gaps in traffic because of the asthmatic engine and recalcitrant throttle / gearbox combo, followed by the bodyrolling, slightly understeery drift that the car gets, its not that impressive.
Its a great family car. Comfortable, well appointed, and the handling is benign, but that's what Mercedes Benz drivers want, not BMW drivers.
DumHed
09-07-2004, 08:43 AM
nah, BMW drivers don't know what they want - except for the BMW badge on the front.
As long as they "know" their BMW is about "sheer driving pleasure" they'll never need to realise how ridiculously boring cars they really are.
Even the M3.

was a pain in the arse getting the baby bolt fitted, then you have to get a particular car seat and not a “baby seat” you need to get a non convertible “toddler seat”
