Australian corporate facebook sites liable for user comments

Brands could be forced to abandon social media campaigns after a landmark advertising watchdog finding ruled they were responsible for derogatory comments posted by users on their Facebook pages and other sites.

The Advertising Standards Bureau is poised to release a report attacking Carlton & United Breweries for user comments posted on its official VB Facebook page that vilified sexual identity, discriminated against women and used obscene language.

The judgment, expected soon, could have far-reaching implications for marketers using social media.

As a guy who has spent the last three years fighting court battles against bullshit like this. I am deeply disappointed. I have no doubt that if this is passes then ALL Australian websites will eventually be liable for what their users say. Shit, I wouldn’t be surprised if you as a Facebook user will be liable for the comments people make on your posts. Over the last few years I have come to understand that the law is completely retarded when it comes to dealing with internet matters.

I see the Australian internet shutting down and the public suffering as an outlet of their free speech will be gone. These litigious people seeking a payout and moronic government bodies just don’t seem to understand that. It’s a slippery slope and I fear we have just gone over the edge.
