Pirate. CEO and founder of ZGeek. Keeper of the diry mo.
As the regulars of ZGeek would know, the last few years have been hard on me and site has suffered. It’s not just the legal action, but also dealing with loss and rebuilding and a bunch of personal matters.
So this has prompted a lot of soul searching about what I want and want for the site and its future. Especially after finding out that Australian law is so weak in protecting our freedom of speech in online publications.
But I’m not here to rant about that again. I am here to talk about the future of ZGeek.
Over the last couple of months I have been toying with closing down the forums. For two reasons, technically they are a mess. 10 years of Vbulletin has left a bloated database that’s full of shit. The other reason is the legal implications of being open to liability for posts you make.
So I was considering for a long time to close the forums and concentrate on just our news blog.
But late one morning it hit me. I am utterly wrong. The forums built this site. The community is what has got me through all the shit of the last few years and in regard to the legal action, the courts have not found myself or any member of the site guilty of anything and screw giving into people like that.
So a new plan has been set and the future of ZGeek is going to change.
- The forums will once again become the focus of ZGeek.
I don’t care if we only have three people using it. The forums will live on. I do this site for no purpose other than the fun of playing on the internet. I hope like minded people will come and join me in the forums for shenanigans.
- We are giving up the news. From now on our front page will be only for news and stuff related to the interests of ZGeek members that we want to pimp. Stuff going on in our lives, projects, rants, stories, info, funny shit and more. But current events will now be discussed in the forums. The front page will be here to showcase the awesome work of the ZGeek mob and thusly we will be giving preference to items written or produced by our members. So I do hope you get behind this. The ZGeek news monkeys and myself will be your MC’s, we will edit your posts. Fix spelling and images so you dont have to worry about that if it’s a concern. We will also filter out the spam.
- The forums will be locked down. This is to provide better security for us and you. Threads will still be viewable, but the content will need a membership to view.
So that’s the plan for the future of ZGeek. Smaller and less, but I hope better. I’ll also be changing the format of the front page to something more fun.
