    The US-based owner of a satirical Wikipedia-style website may be charged under Australian law over a deliberately offensive article about Aborigines.

    The Australian Human Rights and Equal Opportunities Commission (HREOC) contacted Encyclopedia Dramatica owner Joseph Evers, after 20 indigenous Australians complained about the article's content.

    Earlier this year the same article — which includes numerous offensive depictions of Aborigines — was removed from Google's search listings after a request from the Human Rights Commission.

      I don't think the HRC should be getting involved. There is all kinds of "hate speech" in the media which is routinely ignored by state authorities( i saw on the news, Anthony Mundine calling Danny Green a 'cracker' after he won that fight against Roy jones jnr)...and people are allowed to hate things if they want.

      It is interesting who the state is willing to prosecute , it tells you a lot about what they value.

      Let me state this simply: I'm against censorship. I'm also against human unlimited "rights" because I'm in favour of human responsibilities. As in I see no point supporting free speech because I can't see how giving unlimited free speech is a good thing... I support reasonable limits - tending to the liberal side. Don't ask me where the limit is, I've no idea.

      As a person on this planet it is your responsibility to think about what you say. Someone cannot help being born Aboriginal and some of that shit, while in jest, can be seriously hurtful. The people who complained aren't necessarily upright conservatives - they might be people who have lost a relative to petrol sniffing. Or part of the stolen generation.

      That shit can be downright offensive. Maybe not to you, but to them - the people you're actually making fun of.

      As a human it's your responsibility to say what you think - it's also your responsibility to minimize unnecessary damage. Dramatica has failed in this regard.

      But yeah, censorship is a big problem and we give Rudd & co an inch, they'll take a mile like the fucking god botherers that they are
