  • LG caught lying about "green" fridges

An electronics manufacturer with a history of making false environmental claims has been caught doctoring fridges to make them appear more energy efficient.

LG Electronics has agreed to compensate potentially thousands of consumers after two of its fridges - models L197NFS and P197WFS - were found to contain an illegal device that activates an energy-saving mode when it detects room conditions similar to those in a test laboratory.

The so-called circumvention device was discovered last month by the consumer advocacy group, Choice.

Wouldn't buy LG if it was the only thing available. Would rather the beer got hot.

LG manufactures the parts for probably a good 90% of all refridgerators on the market. The Sears/Kenmore appliance brands sold in the US are manufactured by LG as well. They are one of the few companies that build their products entirely from internally sourced materials.

Hands down, they make some of the best fridges out there. Do an exhaustive inspection of one, down to the sealed compression unit, and you'll find they are incredibly well-built.

To be honest, until I personally got a hands on look at the production of their refrigerators and TROMM series washer and dryer sets, I was extremely sceptical of their viability as an appliance manufacturer. All in all, I'd have to say they do deliver a quality product.

I still enjoy seeing LG get slapped around over this, though. Hopefully they'll learn to deliver on what they promise.

I bought an LG fridge last year, and it's fantastic... they've come a long way from the shit they used to make back in the Goldstar days. Most "green" products and advertising are a scam, so don't really care about that - it is funny they got caught with such a blatant scam though.

Here's an idea. Get in on this, LG, because it's a good one.

      Fuck 'em.

If your top criteria for choosing a fridge is efficiency over performance, then go buy something else. You can console yourself with the energy savings after your milk spoils and your chicken gets up and fucks off under the power of its own bacteria.
