  • iiNet tells Senator Conroy to stop lying

One of Australia's largest internet companies has rubbished claims by a federal minister that it supports the Rudd Government's internet filtering plan.

A spokesperson for iiNet today said the company had been in touch with the office of Communications Minister Stephen Conroy to complain after he claimed it was in support of the Government's filtering policy.

"We've been in touch with Senator Conroy's office to reaffirm that we don't support the filter and requested him not to misrepresent our position," they said.

Senator Conroy was quoted yesterday in the Sydney Morning Herald as saying the plan was supported by several internet service providers (ISPs) including iiNet.

Conroy is a dirty, lying little bastard. I wish he'd stop pretending that he knows what he's talking about.

Rudd would win a fair bit of support if he put someone worthwhile in this portfolio....come to think of it, any party in power that did that would garner a fair bit of support really...

Isn't lying like that about a legal matter called perjury? isn't it a jailable offence?

Actually Rudd is HEAVILY behind this filter; it's really his baby in many respects. Regardless of who sits in that portfolio you'll still get the PM pushing the filter; he personally wants it though I'm not entirely sure what drives him on this (I'm confident though that there are more nefarious reasons behind his motivations).

There's only 2 things wrong with that idea: First, this isn't a "legal matter". Second, perjury only applies under oath (ie, giving evidence in a courtroom). But yes, apart from those minor details...um...well, that's pretty much it actually.

I never thought I'd say this, but man I wish we had Richard Alston back. Yes, he was a useless luddite who kept Australia in the technological dark ages for a decade, but he never tried to pull bullshit like this. As far as I remember.

Fuck you KNOW things are bad when Alston looks better... I actually think the NBN will be a blowout too, I can't see them delivering on it - they're trying too hard to milk it at every angle, it's like a $43-billion information-super-tollroad.

Howard probably sent Rudd the link to lemonparty and from that day onward it was his mission to get a filter for this internets thing

Good on iiNet. I think they should have demanded a public apology from him and SMH for error, or at least a formal retraction.
