  • Take drinking age limit to 21, says Rudd

Prime Minister Kevin Rudd says he'd personally like to see the legal drinking age lifted to 21.

But there would have to be rigorous debate and evidence that the policy could reduce binge drinking before the Government would consider it, he said.

"If the evidence is there and it is capable of being proven that it works, then we (will) look at these things and make a decision," Mr Rudd said, when quizzed on ABC Television's Q&A program last night.

Mr Rudd told the audience, including 200 high school students, that booze, like alcopops, was a concerning factor in P-Plate driving deaths.

    What a rat bastard...

Well, it's not like America has a binge drinking problem with their 21 year drinking age. Or any other related social problems, whatsoever.

May not be a bad idea. If they do, kids 14-21 will still drink anyway, but at least alcohol will be the 1st exciting taboo instead of ice or pot.

Maybe even ban it completely, we can have speakeasies and backyard stills again!

I don't see a problem with this. I've never seen an 18 year old kid that was drunk and had the sense to control themselves. It isn't much better at 21, but it is somewhat.

I'm sorry but at 18 you're still a stupid kid. I say go ahead, change the laws, the ones that were fuckups in the first place will drink any way, and hopefully they manage to steer clear of another innocent kid standing in a yard as they hoon down the street before plowing into a tree killing themselves instantly.

There is already a law stating that P-Plate drivers must have a BAC of .02 or less. How exactly is having another law that effectively states the same thing going to stop teenagers drinking and then driving?

There is no 'legal drinkign age', I assume he’s talking about the sale of alcohol as consumption (at least in victoria) is not currently regulated ie- it is not illegal for adults to provide alcohol to minors in a private residence, even if the minors are not their own children.

This is just another episode of the silly cunt pulling his usual moralising bullshit.

Friend of the family was to turn 18, 4 days before the limit in the state of Kansas rolled to 19. The next year it rolled to 20 and then to 21 the following year. Each year she was 4 days away....

Normally they introduce grandfather clauses into legislation like that. But with this government, who knows.

I didn't start drinking till I was 22 mainly because I was poor and had no money to buy my own booze.

I recall seeing Chairman Rudd on TV last evening stating that "it is of personal concern to myself now as my son has just turned 16 and has gained his p's in Canberra".

Regardless of whether such an introduction mentioned above would decrease the number of fatalities/accidents involving blood alcohol concentration levels in young drivers, of which I think it will not; something smacks me of really off centre with this man. In as much as I don't see him reccomending policy that either does not natrually affect of possibly affect him or towing a global line with matters such as COS. National interests don't really seem to play much of a part of this mans psyche.

It may also be of personal concern to Mr Rudd because his father Albert Rudd died following a drink-driving car accident when our Kev was but 11 years old.

Due to youth+alcohol or (for the want of a better phrase) just alcohol?

Well, I guess his dad can't have been that young when he died if Kev was 11 at the time. However I think his opinion might still be a little clouded by the circumstances of his father's death.

Well yes, I was thinking of the other party involved, not so much his father!

All young people are irresponsible and should not be trusted to make their own decisions. On the other hand, all 'grown ups' are responsible and always do the right thing.

      True story.
