So you're a chixx0r.
You're into computers, or like using them, or you like maths, physics, or you play games (online or not)...blah blah blah.
Basically , you're a geek.
What I wanna know is, what is a typical day in the life of a girl geek?
Do you while away your hours fending off unwanted advances from boy geeks? Fragging until your hearts content? Working furiously on some new code? Strategising your way to a D&D victory? Buffing up your rebuttles and flames for some fiesty online debates? Tell me more... :)

Right now this girl geek is sitting in a dark room drinking coffee from a can typing away furiously in 3 different windows at once and listening to some slightly angry music, and pondering what the best way to cook strange leftovers is. Oh and eating strange asian candy.
Can you say stereotypical geek?
Buffy
23-07-2003, 12:12 PM
I sure can :D
That candy is pretty nice though! :p

Well let’s see, at the moment I’m trying to get my son to go for a nap while I type notes for a meeting in Cairns later this week. While also chatting on Irc and icq as well as googling a few things I need to look up, while deciding whether or not its worth setting up my computer before I move because I’m getting really sick of my ex’s computer crashing all the time. And thinking to myself that I find it strange I’m getting along with pirate so well the last few days. Funny, funny man.

Today being an average day so far. I have had a dummy spit at people for not giving me enough information before I undertook the task and now they think I am going to re-do it for them. HA not going to happen before the mid day dead line (perhaps next time they will think to tell me what I need to know, meh probably not). Having decided that people I work with are some what Fucked. I am over their shit, I am working on a large trending presentation. I am using 9 large work sheets in excel and thinking perhaps I should use more to make it more user friendly if ever someone else ever tried to figure out how I made my calculations.
I am having lunch due to a HELP I AM GOING INSANE email I just received. I don’t normally go to lunch as I would prefer to sit at my desk and surf for an hour. Tonight I plan to go home and scab a free meal from my parents before I go and get reacquainted with my couch.
Of cause I have both my MSM and ICQ open at the moment. I have MIRC installed on my PC and know how to get around the fire wall. I also have thought of and used a valid excuse for my tampering.

Do you girl geeks get frustrated by being a girl, I know I get calls sometimes at work, where before I have even opened my mouth the MAN on the other end asks to speak to another man in technical support instead of me..... BAH i say!!
Springer
23-07-2003, 04:59 PM
Im a guy, so i prolly shouldnt be here (or should i?), but i dunno, at the helpdesk here, its the girl that seems to get all the calls.. maybe im in a retarded call center? bah! :)
BtrFly
23-07-2003, 05:00 PM
yes it is frustrating being a girl geek. however you can use the fact that the guy thinks that he knows more to your advantage. you can either use him to do the work, or knock him flat with your knowledge of platforms( not the shoe kind), video cards, and of course gaming! geeks ahoy, brains all the way baby!
Buffy
23-07-2003, 05:02 PM
depends, is your call centre a tech support one? I mean most times I get huge compliments on my tech knowledge and customer service skillz (notice the z hehe) but every so often i get one male that assumes because I am female I must not be as well informed as a male would be.
If a girl in your centre is getting all the calls, maybe shes hella 1337 or really cool to talk to... I dunno :p

Haha, yeah, ISP tech (*cough* ihug *cough*), very uncool indeed.
Either way, i could never understand - guys are useless..
Buffy
23-07-2003, 05:07 PM
Hey! Ihug you say, I have an account there im not using anymore and i've been meaning to close it but I keep forgetting to call, let alone finding time to call.... wanna cancel it for me? :p
btw, at least you aren't working for AOL, like, errr, some people I won't mention... :D

Today was a very un stereo typical day for me as far as my days go, but
my normal days are, getting up at 6.30 making sort and i a cup of coffee, sitting round the computer for a half an hour doing misc stuff, taking him to work going back to my house getting on fire (my multi protocol chat thing) and going to zgeek plus my five different email accounts and checking mails then checking jobs on about 5 different sites, then downloading porn (i'm still talking to people thru thi) and anything else that takes my fancy...sometime during the detail i'll go make my self more coffee and maybe food, back to my computer and typing madly on whatever subject and then picking up sort at 4.30 and going back to his place where we have some cones play some games, myabe watch some tv, he'll do his thing on one of his computers and i'll do mine on another we'll eat, watch some more tv and then settle down in his room after some cones and either play more games, watch a divx, some family guy, futurama or simpsons.....
Right now in between that i am fitting in uni and trying to set up a webserver for my parents house and my dads webpage.
rascuache
23-07-2003, 05:21 PM
I constantly get frustrated by the fact that people will ask sortius to fix their computer before they will ask me, even though we basically know the same amount about puters....i always get passed off.
Forget the fact that i'm doing an IT degree and have been sitting infront of computers since infants school. I'm a chick, that must mean i know nothing!

Im going to make a confession here, I have trouble with Buffy being a geek girl. In the past all my g/f have been utterly fucking clueless when it came to computers.
Now Buffy being as much of a geek as I.. I sometimes for get this..*guilt*
but last night it gave me a thrill that only a geek can know when I handed her my laptop to configure the wireless networking while I went and did other stuff.
*sigh*...and she is so god damn sexy... geek love is soo good :D

A typical day for me consists of surfing, zgeeking, and my kids.
In between I look for work and go to interviews. The job market stinks right now.

a typical day, would include the shuttling and cuddling of mini me.:p
Today I wired up industrial dvd burner, monitor and cam corder to record some home vids for a doc.
Answered email, dubbed 3qtrs to vhs for doc. Converting digital video to mpgs for power point presentation. answered zgeek mail. Talked to ;) till he went to bed. Had lunch and now am producing/script writing for instructional video.
will go home cook dinner for date.

I wish my GF had a little more geek in her. She doesn't know much about computers, and doesn't really have any desire to learn. She works in tourism and loves the outdoors. She's basically the anti-geek girl.

Unfortunatly I dont get to use the computer much at work, I work in an office with an ancient computer that is still running win 95 and considering there are 2 of us in the room, we have to share one puter...plus side is, its sitting right next to my desk...
Anyways, considering I only work 6 streets away from work, In the mornings I usually check mail and stuff before work, and also if I get the chance come home during lunch and go for a bit of a play. My friends usually phone me when something happens with their computers...and sometimes, guys are a little put off that I know just as much if not more about computers than they do...

rascuache you just need to follow the example of one of my female collegues! she just wears very low cut V neck tops and there isn't a male in the building who would overlook her when tech help is required
the best part is she's ownly recently come over from help desk so when she gets stuck she usually comes to me for help :D

I don't think I'm quite geek status yet. I play games, have a job in data entry but I know sweet fuck all about the technical side of it.
I'm not a geek. I just roleplay for entertainment :D
and Buffy - I don't necessarily 'stragetise' in D&D, I prefer characterisation to combat :D :D

They do? Gee... Where was the memo?
At the moment, I wake up, check email, trillian and zgeek; go to work where I spend too many hours behind a damn firewall which means none of the above; then come home, check email, trillian and zgeek, do a little surfing, maybe restart my router because it doesn't like my wireless connection; maybe eat hmmm...
Of course there is always time for trillian and Pratchett and Red Dwarf... Just not much :)

5 Little Known Facts About Women I Learned From Movies
1. They MUST masturbate everytime they are in the shower
2. EVERYONE in the womens changing room is naked and hot..and naked.
3. There is no such thing as a TOTALLY straight woman.
4. Everytime a man masturbates in an airplain bathroom he will get molested.
5. Virgins always do the freakier things and never feel pain their first time.
I don't think i've responded so I think I will now :)
I work in IT doing internal desktop support for about 100 or so users. I do hardware and software support on laptops and desktops, I fix copiers and printers, rollout new images, install new hardware and do a lot of basic infrastructure work like patching phone/data connections, managing the CISCO IP telephony and the Blackberry enterprise server, backups and exchange/AD work.
At home I game.. I usually have any 4 installed at one time and I just play whatever I feel like when I get home from work (ATM it's HL2, Myst IV, Star Wars Battlefront and Medieval:Total War... soon to be Rome: Total War)
I also enjoy watching movies on my projector in the loungeroom and leeching off people when I can...... free stuff is cool.
Oh yeah...and i have a "Got Root" hoody i bought from ThinkGeek.. shame a lot of people don't get that joke and just think I'm being dirty. :p

I love gaming! But I find it rather annoying that if you win everyone thinks you're a guy! No matter how hard you try to convince them you're female, they won't believe you if you beat them! Yeah, and if some GUY loses they all call him a girl...wtf?
I don't actually do any geeky work so to speak, but I set up/built home computers and the network. That was fun! :) I always find at LANs women seem to be in the minority..hehehe :D;) This is great, more geeks for us!! mmm geeky men. (also leeching and gaming LAN goodness..:D:D)

boil the leftovers in water. it becomes soup...or maybe stew if you have less water.
also, buffy, gIrLgEeK practiced doing weird things with her nick and doing interviews...and helping with game development.

Typical day?
Get up, go to work. At work, attempt to type up Contracts, Leases, etc while multitasking in msn, zgeek, icq (before it made my pc spit its metaphorical dummy), and a variety of other forums that prolly arent of interest here. Attempt to leave work on time, but get stuck too busy posting/msging to getthefuckouttahere.
Go home, read whichever book im reading (atm exile from Dark Elves). Then depending on the nite, play scrabble, watch simpsons, go to shoon and funks place to get my withdrawal symptoms tempered, play d&d with some old school geeks, LOTR Risk, oh and I nearly forgot, DRINK.
I am a boring geek. I apologise for letting the female of the species down. Lamentably I am not online at home. Otherwise list would consist of: Go to work. Work. Come home. Get on. Maybe some sleep in there somewhere.

Girl geeks rock. I still work in IT retail and it is so refreshing to have a genuine geek girl come in buying something for herself. Some of my favourite days...... sigh.......
Had one the other day lean over to the wanker getting served beside her and correct the bullshit he was trying to spin on wireless networking.... Sigh..... made my day.

I only got a computer 3 years ago, now everyone comes to me to fix their computer problems, *sigh*
My day, well....... I am a stay at home mum & I live on this thing when I have time, I am sitting here now on a Sunday morning in my PJ's, I usually have 10 Windows open at once so I don't miss anything & am chatting to friends as well.
I buy computer magazines (gasp) because I like to read them.
I got a new computer this year & voided my warranty in less than a week because I didn't want to pay someone to install my dvd player, dvd burner, & 80gb harddrive that I had installed in my old computer.
My next project is to install Linux on a spare drive just because I want to try it, but so far I have managed to stop myself since I don't know much about Linux but I found 4 different Linux installations in the cds I have saved from my substantial computer magazine collection & have a variety to choose from.
I guess I must be a geek. :)
