This has probably been done before but anyway,
A, Who is your favourite game character?
B, Why?
Mine would have to be Ben from Full Throttle because he is the main character from the BEST ADVENTURE GAME EVER!
He is also a tough biker not afraid to take on anyone who gets in his way.
This like juggles between so many, Kain from FFII is one of my favorites, crossing from good, to evil, to good again, and still maintaining his bad ass black night look, I liked Leo from FFIII, he was a bad ass general if i remember right, i can go on naming all of these FF characters I think are incredible, and If i kept on going i'd have a list of over a hundred characters probably, so i'll just go off and have to say....Dante might be one of them, from Devil May Cry.....he just looks awesome and freaking kicks all ass with his sword and guns...

Either Link from The Legend of Zelda or Guybrush Threepwood from the Monkey Island games.

"...Sly Boots, Master of Time and space..... OK I made that last bit up" from Anachronox.
Most Earthbound characters.
Klarth from Tales of Phantasia, the only video game character to ever use the phrase "Like a tiger!"
Captain Goodnight, from the ancient Apple II game of the same name. He was by far the first Duke Nukem-style smart-arse hero, even if the game itself was fairly crappy.
And Manny Calvera from Grim Fandango. And of course Guybrush Threepwood and Stan the Used Ship/Coffin/etc salesman ;)
Oh, and Millenia from Grandia 2. It's like a running joke with some of my friends now to put "...of VALMAR!!" after a mundane object's name to turn it evil ie. "Pass me the remote...of VALMAR!". We are sad little men.
The dude from Kung-Fu Master on the Atari 2600. No story line at all, but the guy could whoop all your crappy characters into a ball of whooped characters.

Minsc ! From Baldurs Gate 1/2. Why: his sayings and antics. and of course, boo.
(Boo, his hamster companion, who he swears is actually a space hamster that talks to him. A more popular theory is that ol' Minsc has taken one too many hits to the head.)
Alltime number 1 game quote:
"Go for the eyes, boo. GO FOR THE EYES! RYAAAAAAAAR!"
some other random quotes;
"magic is impressive, but now, MINSC leads! blades for EVERYONE!"
"Minsc shall lead with blade and boot, boo will take care of the details."
"Fall on my blade evil! I wont be as gentle."
(while in ranger sneak mode)"None shall see me!... though, my battlecry may give me away..."
ahhhh Minsc. I could go on, but you get the idea ^_^.

sorry for being a bit mindless about this one, but ..... Lara Croft - for obvious reasons :D
Guybrush gets my vote. He lost a bit of coolness when he gained a voice actor in Monkey Island 3. The guy did a good job, its just that the jokes seem funnier when your read the text off the screen. Either that, or the jokes got crapper after Monkey Island 2.

I really love The Nameless One from Planescape: Torment.... that
dark unremembered past, the battlescars, immortality, a
charismatic 'something' that draws people to him even though
it's like a moth to a flame.... the potential for him to become
anything he wants to be... he fucking rocks.

Could not agree more!!! :D
Roger Wilco from the Sierra Space Quest Series is my fav!
I loved the text based versions, especially when you told your Roger to do something incorrect and the game responded "Let's not and say we did". That has to be one of my all time favorite one liners. :D
EDIT: by text based, I mean the commands are text based, not the graphics. (this clarification is just for those of you unfortunate enuf to have missed the golden age of PC adventure games in the late 80's to early 90's)

The Bouncing Kamungas...
"WTF??" I hear you all say. I like them for their stupid name. You see, The Bouncing Kamungas was the name given to this old game on the Apple ][e. You were a watermelon farmer, and you armed with (of all things) a pitchfork. The Bouncing Kamungas would fall from the sky, and attempt to bounce on your watermelons! Barstools! But if they landed on your pitchfork, they died, and kiddies got their melons and everyone lived happily ever after. Oh, did I mention that there was always lightning in the sky? You must have been growing them on lightning planet or something. And if you held your pitchfork in the air long enough, you'd get zapped! Whoah!
OK.. Time for my meds...
Oh, and Freddie Pharkas is a cool name too. :D

NEGLECTED AUSTRALIAN GAME CHARACTERS
Here are some characters from often overlooked Australian games.
AFL COMMENTATOR - From Aussie Rules Footy.
http://www.zgeek.com/~movis/GameCharacters/AFLCommentator.png
This stylish commentator offered a never ending stream of accurate analysis on the state of the game at the end of each quarter and a concise review at it's completion. He was one of the first to draw the connection between a team dominating the foward (sic) line and them leading the match. Often he would note things that the less informed viewer may not notice, like how a team will have to work harder to keep in front despite the fact that they are 15 goals in front.
H. JUSTICE - Worlds greatest Batsmen, From International Cricket.
http://www.zgeek.com/~movis/GameCharacters/HJustice.png
Although he played for the West Indies and not Australia, H. Justice is still worthy of mention. He batted with the level of justice his name suggests. A career filled with highlights, including a high point of scoring 104 (not out) out of a total of 147 in a 10 over match against England. His great skills and attacking style allowed other West Indian batsmen to bat aggresively, safe in the
knowledge that H. Justice will save the day. This batting strength gave the great West Indian bowling attack (featuring such greats as W. Marley and M. Lurie) an ability to bowl in an attacking style without worrying about economy as they knew that either they had a large target to defend or that H. Justice would spearhead a succesful chase for any target.
The Umpires - From Aussie Rules Footy and International Cricket
http://www.zgeek.com/~movis/GameCharacters/Umpires.png
The umpires from both Aussie Rules Footy and International were zany characters.
Cricket Umpire: A brilliant individual. He Always signalled fours and sixes with great enthusiasm that acknowledged the skill of the batsmen involved. Also when adjudicating on appeals for wickets he delivered his verdict of "OUT!" or "NOT OUT!" in a firm, chilling voice whilst standing a resolute stance, this meant that the players dared not question his decision.
AFL Goal Umpire: When there was an attempt at goal, the screen changed to a head one shot of the goal umpire, after a short pause he signaled either a goal or a point. and was met with either rapturous digitised applause or angry jeers accordingly.
AFL Boundary Umpire: So much wisdom was contained in the signature phrase of this umpire. When you heard his digital voice utter "OUT OF BOUNDS...ON THE FULL!" you knew you were privileged to have heard it. Often he would also utter "OUT OF BOUNDS" when the ball did not go out on the full, this was less
impressive, however he made up for it by delivering an accurate boundary throw-in over his head, allowing the ruckmen to contest fairly and continue the game.
AFL Field Umpire (not pictured): Unlike many of today's umpires he was able to bounce the ball accurately every time, without the ball ending up 10m away from the bounce location. Truly a remarkable feat.
SPECIAL BONUS: WALLY BEAR - From Wally Bear and the NO! gang
http://www.zgeek.com/~movis/GameCharacters/WallyBear.png
(Although not from an Australian game, Wally Bear is too good to ignore.)
Wally Bear, what a hero, he knew that stupid, patronising propaganda was the best way to promote a healthy lifestyle to kids. He is pictured using his amazing logic skills to solve a problem.
This classic Seanbaby article (http://www.seanbaby.com/nes/wallybear.htm) does Wally Bear and his NO! gang more justice than anything I ever wrote could.

Seriously though, my favs are the Healer character from Rudra no Hihou, for purifying teh earth in only 15 days, i mean, thats good. Also, Meta from Legend of Legaia. Sure, he's not really a playable character, but he's too cool to overlook. I will also list Arche from Tales of Phantasia, for her sheer comedic value. Next, id say Leim, the lion cub from Terranigma: a lot of people find him to be annoying, but give the little guy some credit. I think he's pretty awesome. Last, ill have to vote in Pip from Chrono Cross. I hated Chrono Cross, i dispise Square for making a crap game like that. Luckily, they put in Pip to save the game =D . Go Pip!

Avatar, because he did giveth and he did taketh from people's undefended chest of drawers in the city of Monitor. At least when I was playing he did. He may have also participated in the odd bout of murder and pillage.
Roger Wilco was also pretty [H]ard.
As for FF, pffft. A poor man's RPG, and a console game at that.

Squall from Final Fantasy 8 (Zell was cool too), Psyco Mantis, Grey Fox, Solid Snake from MGS and Master Chief from Halo. Last but not least, Divayth Fyr from Morrowind. Who can't love a guy who gets his jollies from watching people get killed while they try to steal his stuff?:D
Edit: Tanya from red alert was cool. That laugh was the greatest thing in the C&C series.

Not to pimp Planescape anymore but...The Nameless One.
He's immortal, has grey skin and he's covered in scars, yet he still manages to pull chicks.
I tip my hat to you, oh Nameless One.

Yeah they were cool, especially in worms 2 and worms world party (and probably others but i never played them) when you could change the voices to all sorts of themes. The worms theme from the original was great, I did a school music assignment on it, describing the style etc. of it.
I also liked Lemmings, they were great characters. Lemmings 2 was probably the best. I recently downloaded it again and was happily playing it.
But my all time favourite would have to be Leisure Suit Larry! Clocked LSL 1-7 (but not 4 mainly cos it doesn't exist) and they were all great!
Necron

Definately Duke Nukem:
"Im gonna rip off your head, and shit down your neck".
"suck on my BOOMstick"
And most memorably the strippers and the 1 dollar bills "do you wanna dance", "shake it baby".

LSL and Roger Wilco have to take top honours for the many repeated hours they've consumed.
Tommy Vercetti for the modernists.
