well in brisbane CBD, to eat on the cheap i goto a place under the queen street mall (well kinda under it). anyone who lives in brissy should know it, its near the underground bus stops, near the maccas and KFC, its asian place and its really good. $5.20 will get you a good feed of Spicy Chicken with noodles.

There is a little place on Queen st in Glasgow city. A Japanese joint called Ichiban. I first came across it when I was working in the Highlands and had eaten horrible School Camp food for 4 months. This place does authentic Japanese noodles, sushi, etc.
It is also really cheap. Udon noodles with salmon, fresh king prawns, choi, chicken and beef will set you back about 4quid. They also give you a choice between a chilled or warm Saki (the cold one is goooooooood) and there are long classy communal tables.
Lastly, the people who serve you have Scottish accents, coming accross a Japanese looking bloke who speaks Scottish is cool.

Stocking took me to this place for dinner when we were in Glasgow a couple of weeks ago... she's been raving about it ever since I met her almost a year ago, and I have to say that, after eating there, her raves were spot-on. If you *ever* find yourself in Glasgow, you have to eat there. :D

Noodle Jone in Frankston.
Mainly because of the name. It varies based on what you're looking at (serviettes, shirts, menus). It's listed as Noodle Jone, Noodle Jones and Noodle Zone.
Oh and the make a good Kway Teow. :p

When I was in school (mid 90's) the fish & chip shop in Milsons Point just near my school made the _BEST EVAR_ calamari rings. They couldn't be beat.
I should go there, see if they're still up to standard. I should also look in a street directory for the nearest intersection so I can direct people there.

for the best Laksa EVER, head for The Malay, corner King and Castlereagh St in Sydney CBD. There's a little door facing south on the eastern side of Castlereagh St - head in the door and down the stairs - it's the BEST! :D
The same people also make the same Laksa in a shop on the North side of Bridge St, but I forget the cross streets or the name of it... The Castlereagh St shop is better because the Bridge St store uses crappy chopsticks ;)

On King St in Newtown.au there is a place called 'Singapore Gormet' that looks seedy, but does the BEST ginger and shallot chilli fish in town. And $10 for a WHOLE feckin fish! CHEAP!
...and for that 3:00AM kebab, head to fatima's on cleveland st in sydney.au. they cook the lamb and/or felafel in front of you. Nummy.

I've been there! Only because I loved the name of the place. Pity I hate seafood.

our local takeaway used to do them too, until it burnt down...
I think it all started in a takeaway store in Bondi though
anyway, speaking of out Bathurst way, Mackies Cafe in Orange (in some back street that isn't on the MINI's sat nav ) make *THE BEST* (and largest) "Damper Burgers" (kick ass Hamburger, but on damper bread instead of standard burger buns) in the whole wide world!
I have driven from Sydney to Orange just to eat one, and it was SO worth it. Old Mr Mackie and his wife retired a year or two ago, and the new owners have renovated and stuff, but the food is still just as good. I told Mr Mackie that we had driven from Sydney to eat his food once a few years back and he didn't believe me :(
And how could we have a good food thread without a mention of Krispy Kreme (http://www.krispykreme.com.au) :D

Where I live, Illinois, USA there are a couple great little diners if you like a good greasy spoon. One is "Lisa's Diner", a lot of the workers from the steel mill across the street stop in there as well as big truck drivers. The other place is "Itty Bitty Restaurant", the food is great, the price is right and the people who own the place are there all the time and they are wonderful. In the small town I live in (Roxana) the Best Restaurant In Roxana is my kitchen. I have to add though the best restaurant in another small town in my area is Thuvia & Beowulf's kitchen.

Bitton Gourment, Swanson St, Alexandria (suburb of Sydney)
The edeity menu selection is:
Breakfast -
cigarette
Long Black
chocolate croissant
"Bitton" omellette (corn, onion, eggs, special bitton chilli sauce)
sparkling grape juice
2 cigarettes
hot chocolate
Lunch -
Cigarrette
Long Black
Monkey Nut Kebabs
Morroccan Chicken (best morroccan sauce you will ever have. the guys wife is from morrocco i think and he makes it and sells it. It wins awards and stuff)
2 cigarrettes
sparkling grape juice
Tell David Bitton that Luke sent you. He'll then say in a french accent "you know that asshole?! Tell him to tip me." He gives out fantastic insults in french, but he's very polite to all the locals, so if you just try look local and dont mention me you'll be ok.

In Sydney:
Japanese - Sushi Suma - Cleveland Street, Surry Hills
*Good food, reasonably priced, and generous portions. It's small and always very busy. Don't mistake the staff's "haste" for rudeness. They like to have a high turnover of tables, as there are always people waiting. Some sort of booking is pretty much essential if you don't want to wait 2 hours for your meal*
Spanish - Casa Asturiana - Liverpool Street, Sydney
*On Friday and Saturday nights they have wandering Mariachi. Excellent tapas and mains. Many jugs of sangria is a must.*
Chinese - Superbowl - Goulburn Street, Haymarket
*Open until very late, so if you find yourself hungry after a movie or need some fuel during your crawl, wander in and order a dish of pippis in X.O. sauce and some congee (with "chinese donuts"). No matter what people may tell you, the restaurants in Chinatown are all of the same standard when it comes to dinner. Stay away from BBQ King if you want more culinary cred. by not being seen surrounded by gwailos.*
|
------> If you want a good yum cha place in Chinatown, stay away from The Emperor's Garden. The (new) Marigold and the (old) Kam Fook are probably the best choices, followed by The Silver Spring, but be prepared for huge queues on Saturdays and especially Sundays.
Pub Bistro - The Regent - Anzac Parade, Kingsford
*Their $5 steaks [medium, peppercorn sauce, mash (when you buy a drink)] are solid. My favourite place to kick back for some casual dining and drinking.*
German - The Lowenbrau Keller - Corner of Playfair and Argyle Streets, The Rocks
*The German beers in 1 litre steins are usually reason enough, but combined with the Oom-Pah-Pah band, the nail-hammering contests and the ungodly amounts of pork of various description in their menus make this place a very compelling location to start your Rocks orgy of hedonism.*
Those are my favourites, and regulars anyway.
I'm such a pig.

gouger st adelaide, most people should know it down near the mars bar on the same side is ying chow. simple the best northern chinese food you will eat. order salt and pepper squid, e-shand beef, red vinegar ribs, green chilli beans and a fried rice and it should cost you $20.
used to go when it was a trade secret about 8 years ago before it was done up, and it still looks dodgy now but has to be the best chinese i have ever tasted. ky-chow is owned by the same guys further up the street near the court but i dont think its as good, the salt and pepper squid is to die for, please send me some now.

Last night SOC and I spent all the money we'd earned slaving at the Big Brother house on a meal, we went to Maggiore's in Covent Garden (in a pretty big city). My meal consisted of.
Half a bottle of French Chardonay.
An entree (starter to the US types) of Pureed green peas, Scallops and Fois Gras. Followed by Duck, potato and rosemary gnocchi and roasted vegies and finishing with a Hazelnut Parfait, fresh local berries and lavender cream.
And I had the other half bottle of yummy chardonnay, a starter of scottish smoked salmon with a horseradish sauce and greens, a main of blanquette of veal with spring vegetables and a desert of 3 icecreams served on a glass plate (spearmint, chocolate and vanilla)... the meal was magnificent, the service divine and the whole night was worth the 6 hours of HELL we went through to make the money to pay for it all!:D
