i need something that will update all of my albums (~10 gigs, 1400 tracks) with track info, album titles, and band names, all at the same time, so that my new iPod will be perfect, and i won't have to go through every cd and update manually (stupid wmp9!)

i used to use
this (http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windowsmedia/download/bppowertoys.aspx#managament), but i've updated to wmp9, and it supposedly has the same features (i haven't found them.. )

if anyone has a utility that's reasonably fast and easy to use, and has accurate information (cddb), that would make me very happy :)

How the hell is that going to work? Surely there isn't software that can tell you what a song encoded in mp3 is?

CDDB works on a UIN on the CD and downloads the track info from a database.

okay, maybe cddb won't work, but is there something out there?

all of the tracks are tagged, it's just that most of them aren't correct, because of spelling errors or stupidity

actually, to edit my query, what about something that changes the name of the actual file to something, and moves it into folders, based on the track tag?..

Not that I know of, but I'll stay subscribed to the thread to find out.

I didn't mean to come across as caustic in my earlier post, I was shocked and stunned and thought you had found something that will save me hours of work.

MusicBrainz initially used Relatable's patented TRM (a recursive acronym for TRM Recognizes Music) for acoustic fingerprint matching.

Here's a program that I used many years ago which probably does as close to what you want as I've seen. I dunno how good it is these days though, since my MP3 player doesn't require you to go through such bullshit.

Tag&Rename (http://www.softpointer.com/tr.htm)
In short... you pick a directory, it searches CDDB/freedb using the filenames, you pick one from the list, it renames all the files based on a mask that you set (eg. Track - Artist - Song), and then it sets the ID3 tags. It can also make playlists and stuff. I also vaguely recall it having a feature that lets it tag files based on the existing filename, or vice versa, so that a CDDB isn't required if the MP3s are your own mix.

There's also another one that I used before I found Tag&Rename:
MP3 Internet Renamer (http://fileforum.betanews.com/detail/MP3_Internet_Renamer/990004202/1) (The original URL doesn't work anymore, so it probably isn't in active development)
This one, rather than searching based on filenames, opens up a web browser where you choose which album you're tagging, then it rips the info out of the web page. It's also pretty customisable. I think the only advantage this one had is that it grabs a little picture of the album cover too.
