i know, or at least i'm pretty sure (from what i've heard here), that american media has become a large part of australian media, but i've noticed that hardly any australian media has made it stateside..
the only examples that i can think of are nicole kidman, 'the crocodile hunter' and the movie 'mr. accident'.

have other people had the same experiences?
what about the australian experience with american media?

Back in the early 80's they used to show an Australian soap called Prisoner Cell Bock H about a womens prison. Other than that Priscilla Queen of the Dessert, Mad Max, and a bunch of bad B movies.

By the way Mad Max: Fury Road started pre-production last month and is slated for Summer 2004.

We seem to be infecting the US though our movie stars rather than our movies. Most Australian movies seem to be packed with regional humour. Stuff that I think would go right over an Americans head.

Mad Max 4 not filming in Australia. Now that pissed me off! :swear:

I can't remember where I read it, but apparently Australian slang is starting to crop up in America.

I was told that the Australian movie "The Castle" was released in the US. Does anyone know if that is true or not?

Damned if I can work out how they would translate it for American audiences... there was soooo much regional and cultural references in it, I don't think it'd be possible!

It definitely was released in North Aemerica with some adaptation, but I don't know how widespread the release was or how much the move was localised/edited. I would imagine it would have been a very limited release, much like you won't see art house/alternative cinema at multiplexes in Australia.

The Dish had a limited release in North America as well.

there have actually been quite a few australian/new zealand (yah, i'm grouping them together for the obvious cultural connection) films stateside. among them:

LOTR
Whale Rider
Romper Stomper
Breaker Morant
Priscilla...

and, musicwise, it's been a huge influence:

AC/DC
INXS
Split Enz
The Church
Hoodoo Gurus
The Doves

I know that Chopper went pretty well in the states.
I think that Hercules Returns also went pretty well too.

Yep. I believe they dubbed over the phrase "university education" with "college education."

the original phrase was "Tertiary education". The names of cars were also overdubbed with American brands.

Yes, "the castle" is in some circulation here. picked it up at holywood video of all places. not a bad flick. i'm sure a lot went right over my head, but it wasn't that bad.

Don't forget Rabbitproof Fence. For those of you who have seen it, how is Whale Rider? The movie sounds unbearable from the description I read.

i actually liked it. it's beautifully shot, has strong characterization and a taught story. and keisha castle-hughes pulls off an astounding performance. you do have to fight off the tweed jacket with elbow patch crowd at the theatre but thats not so bad.

it also is one of the handful of movies i can think of that has a young teenage girl as the progagonist. that it doesn't end with her getting a boyfriend or becoming the cool kid or some patronizing hollywood bullshit is astounding.

the only other recent film i can think of that does that is Spirited Away. they both are about growing up and learning to deal with responsibility. and while they might be about 13 year old girls, its a universal message.

now the film i'm apprehensive about is Thirteen. i expect it will be exploitative for arts sake just like Kids was. anytime the filmmakers insist on this "realism" aspect of a story about teenagers you can bank on voyeristic nonsense.

It was crap. The worst movie I've ever seen. I loved all TV before I watched that movie. That actor was horrible, and he also directed that movie. I hate it with a huge passion. And his other movie Reckless Kelly also sucked. I've never seen a movie that bad. I would sit through any of the lifetime movies rather than see those again. I want the time I spent watching them back.
And what kind of name is Yahoo Serious. That's almost an oxymoron, and hey he is a moron.
