Last year, i worked fulltime at a shitty supermarket for a year. The management sucked ass, but I battled on and managed to survive a whole year.

Eventually refused to apolagise for something that wasnt my fault, so got the arse.

And now I cant get a job.

This last week, iv had two very good job interviews, where both my resume and personality have passed with flying colours. then they comment "we will check your references.. get back to you".

then i never hear from them again. its the same EVERY single time.

so its fucked. i cant get a job, my wife has cancer and is swearing she is going to die.. but no wait a minute, the banana makes everything allright.

Don't use them as a reference. Since you've only had one job....who'll care anyway?

Or you could tell them that the manager you worked for is no longer in their employ?

Also, here in the states there are laws governing what an past employeer can or can't say about you. Here all they can say is yes, iokdidoki worked for us, and worked 40hrs a week, and made $5.20 an hour.
That an other than Yes, Id' hire them again is all they can divulge.

Australia a bit more liberal.. I have no doubt said lame employer has no qualms about saying "David sux0rs"

Furthermore.. without listing that job.. I havnt got a lot to show for my life =(..

This seems an appropriate place to biatch about my Nazi Moderation boss.
She gives me the shit jobs...while they are in the infancy stage of being just a damn fart. But then when they become actually interesting or challenging...I'm cut out of the loop. WTF!

God damn it! I have absolutely no control over my own life right now and it's driving me farking insane. I've no work at work, pleanty of work at home, it's all farking backwards.

I want something to do at work! And there's plenty, the nazi is whinging on about having too much to do. And I'm not aggressive enough. NOT. I don't talk to her cause we "are not pals". When I ask a question I'm shot down, when I don't I'm shot down. So I don't. I sit here and waste time with u guys. some nice enough, others just fukwits.

I need a life.

Io: give them your moms name as the manager and phone number inplace of the real one.

do what many here do to cover up a bad job experience, make up a company and put the reason you left was teh company went under.

Giving someone a bad reference is illegal in AUS. The WORST they can say about you is that you worked for them. eg:

"This person was in our employ from this date to this date".

Although it's hard to get evidence, if you find out they've said anything worse then you can sue for defamation.

When I got my forklift licences, I was informned it was virtually impossible to get a job if you didn't have any experience (catch 22) but one of the trainers there reeled out a massive list of all the companies that had gone bust that he said I could refer to as being employed by. There was no way they could check up as they had gone bust :D

I've worked for places that have gone bust and it is true.

Also I've worked for companies that had been sold, that had NO record of previous employees.

You or someone you know can actually call to see what kind of reference you are getting. Impersonate Jane Doe, who works at the corner quickie mart (or something like that)

Wow, now that is a damn fine idea... definitely do this. While you probably can't record teh conversation (that's usually not allowed) you can transcribe the conversation and at least scare teh crap outta them if they are giving you a bad reference.

What kind of jobs are you applying for? Perhaps its an issue of experience and not bad referees. Every single job I've had has had a bad ending. You have to be 'creative' when giving them the details of your referee.

Did you get along well with anyone from your last job? If so, just put him/her as a referee, giving only their mobile number (because they no longer work there). I don't know if these places require more details than that, but it is worth a shot.

That's exactly what I do. I've always worked at the bottom of the pile, so it's easy to find someone up the ladder who I actually like.

use a friend for a referee.

pretend your friend owns a company and you worked for them.

just discuss with your friend before hand, what sort of job you had, how good an employee you were and things like salary and actual job responsiblities.

then your friend is prepared to be your ex-boss.

works everytime.

And a mighty fine rubber salesman you were too!

Passed all the latex allergen tests.
Was the best damn fingerstall salesman in the northeast!

fingerstalls for those of you that don't know are "condoms" for one finger. Used by proctologists.

I had a friend in high-school who worked at Big W and rose up pretty high even though he was still in school. He oversaw the results of one of these tests and talked to his manager about them. There is some kind of trick but I can't for the llife of me remember what it was.

Maybe you gotta answer like you've got no balls and will do anything they tell them. Or maybe you gotta display independance and leadership skills. I cant remember but maybe someone here knows?

But yeah, they DO look at the tests.
