A buddy called me this afternoon claiming that this morning on Sunrise (7/SYD) there was discussion regarding a newly introduced chewing-gum drug test for drivers.
The basics of it are that you are stopped at an RBT, breath tested and then at their discretion given a stick or something of chewing gum.
You chew for 3 minutes and somehow a result is given from the gum either by change of colour or testing with another chemical.
If the result is positive you then get your ass dragged back to the temple of doom for a blood test and subsequent jailing.
Anyone heard anything about this ???
False positives ???
.
I heard about it on JJJ. They are doing a trial soon.
Couldn't find any links.

meh...
been in the news for years now...
first it was a sweat test
then it was a saliva test
now chewing gum....
Bah who cares?
If you drink and drive you deserve to get caught. I'm constantly arguing with my gf about it...

I can't see people liking that aspect of this new test.
Funny thing is that it would be easier to fool a cop with this method. It wouldn't be all that hard to pop a dummy peice of gum into your mouth before the test and just swallow the real gum.

Not if the frickin gum they give you is flourescent green or pink or something. I feel for those who have to drive home at the end of a big night. Get a cab, its safer anyway
So many people drive around bent off thier tits in Melbourne anyway i know this for reasons i wont go into ............
Just have a look nowdays how many people go out and party in larger cities. Then drive home.
So what if you have had a couple of hits of "e" if anything it hightens your perseptions of your surroundings thus making you concerntrate more on the road when you are driving.
Other Drugs like Hooch (As the police like to call it) well thats a different story.
It all depends on what they are testing for (Heroin, Opium, Morphine, Mdma ,Hooch etc etc)
They have been going on about this for years there has been many debates and some people think its oversteping the line when you ask people to do things like (chew on this sir untill i say stop) , i mean what would you do if you pulled up to a (RBT) and a cop said "chew on this untill i say stop" id probably tell him to get bent.
Conculsion:
Sometimes maybe its better to get a cab....
Ps. I forgot to mention in Adelaide they are trialing this new system where you have to install a breath tester in your car that costs somewhere in the region of $500 or so that is hooked up to a computer that reads your (BAC) before you can even start your car.
Personaly i think this is a good idea (However) its also an invasion of privacy.

Hello invasion of privacy! I know I leave DNA every where I go, however I would object to giving it to a cop especially after he has seen my license with my name and address on it. If this gets past it’s a great way of collecting DNA. I have nothing to hide but I don’t want my DNA to be on a database. I believe the police are corrupt and it is likely that innocent people will go to jail because they touch some candy wrapper at a petrol station that was later found next to some body in a dumpster.
