I dont know how i managed to do this but whenever i double click on a folder instead of opening the a window showing the folders contents, its instead opens up a search window.
So to open a folder the normal way i have to right click and go to 'open' which is about the 5th on the list and 'Search' is the first choice.
If that makes any sense to anyone can you perhaps tell me how I can go about fixing this?

No problem :)
Try opening a folder (by right-clicking) and select folder options. Select the "file types" tab, then scroll down to "folder" in the list.
Click the "advanced" button. In the "actions" list, select "open", then click "set default".
You may also need to do this for the "file folder" class. Also, I don't know if it's "open" or "explore" that you want to set as the default action. Experiment and see - let me know if it works.

Thanks mate :D
When I changed it for file folder 'open' wasnt an option so I clicked on 'New' and for the action i wrote 'open' and the application used for it I used explorer.exe.
That worked fine but now it opens every folder in a new window.. its not really a major problem but if you know a way around that I would be grateful.
Thanks

Open the folder options dialogue again. Select the "restore defaults" button. If that doesn't work, choose the "Open each folder in the same window" option. I'm not sure whether this will work, since you manually created an action, but it might.

I think the real question is why did it start doing that in the first place?

The answer is in this thread (http://forums.zgeek.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=4321).
Just gotta do a bit of Regedit'ing.
Edit: I quoted it because I'm nice and stuff.
