is there a program or anything that i can use to save a .asx (windows streaming media) or .ram (realmedia) file to my computer?
if not, does anyone know of a program that will let me convert the streaming media to .mpg or .avi so i can save it?
if so, much thanks :D

view the source of the webpage, find the file, figure out where its located then
start.... run.... about:<a href="http://www.websitehere.com/directory/filename.asx>Download</a>
a page will open, right click the link, save target as.

If not, then an easier way to do what you said would be to use Mozilla. Right-click on page and click View Page Info and click on the Media tab; a list of all the media on that page will be displayed. Find the media you want in the list, and click Save As.

That's what hazza has suggested.
Why else would you choose 'Save Target As'?

As I said, my suggestion was merely an easier method. There is no problem with hazza's method, however it requires you to search through the HTML code, copy and paste the link. Come to think of it, there is a problem with that method... You're up shit creek if the file has been embedded from another folder location to prevent people stealing it easily.

*shrugs*
whatever its just a method i know.
Go googling for 'Streambox VCR Suite'
Don't know if it works for the newer streaming protocols, but works like a charm for others - even ones that use streaming protocols and/or don't cache.
Oh, and use the latest (it comes in a bundle) - it may be beta, but it works.

i've got no problem with watching it as streaming, but i want to watch high-res videos, and my dialup doesn't exactly work well with 256k streams :p
does the streambox vcr suite work on only reasonably live streaming video, or will i need to let it bufferize for 4 hours?
i'll give mozilla a try, too :D
Streambox basically streams direct to disk rather than to a media handler, so it depends on the protocol being used. (I'm pretty sure Streambox tries to fill in the gaps if it can though)
I used it to download a RealMedia 'clip' (40 minutes long) just recently over a dial-up line. When the file is played through RM its crystal clear. When the same clip is opened over the net the quality is poor at best (I'd say it would be better if I had something better than dialup :) )
Some other protocols will just throw data your way (UDP probably) and if anything gets lost, tough. In that case you really need access to the source file to download (rather than view), but often even the Mozilla trick won't help you there. People are getting smarter about streaming media damnit!

hehe. 'video streams' ;)
side note, if it's quicktime you can copy the temp files as long as the video is still loaded in the player.....

it all works great, thanks everyone :D
heh, does anyone know of any good sites that have lots of music videos and such, and that aren't protected in any way that will keep me from saving them
( note: .mov > .asx > .rm :p )
