for a few years now I've had ideas about turning old technology into new, some of them fairly easy... like the good ol' 166 *nixboxes... but that's not really recycling is it.
At the moment, my current project is turning an old pentium laptop into a HUD (Heads Up Display for all those non-1337s out there). I had thought about it for a while, till one day, with nothing to do but wait for someone, I decided to pull it apart.
It was quite hard to pull the baby apart, being an IBM Thinkpad, but I persevered and gained access to the sweet sweet core of the lappy.
I have since discovered that taking out the neat light dispersing material behind the screen and adding a nice strength light that will cover the whole screen (unlike the cold cathode tube already in it) gives a much clearer HUD and screen. I have yet to mount this in the car, hopefully this weekend I might get some help from a geek friend from sydney.
Anyway, if I pull this off (and no, not with my hand), I'll supply pictures for all to browse and use for their own HUDs.
If anyone else has decided to recycle some old technology, please post, I am eager to read them....
