I was watching simpsons the other day (see how everything can be related to it ?) and it was that episode where Homer eats HOT chilli and goes on some weird bender, and then discovers he must find his soulmate. His first instinct is "thats easy, its marge" but then goes on later to question that .....

My understanding of 'soulmates', is that supposedly there is someone on this planet that is perfectly matched for everyone one of us, and in similar to a 'buddist' attempt to acheive inner enlightenment, the dating population is striving to find a life long partner/soulmate.

Despite the tone of my comments, I don't totally discount the notion, I'm a cynic/agnostic type. So I cannot totally define my opinion here.....

Do you believe in soulmates, do you think there is destined love, and lifelong compatibility. Are people settling too easy, or are they too fussy. How is it possible that some couples that have been together seem so totally perfect for each other...

What do others think about soulmates ?

Can you honestly concieve the thought that there is only 1?
You have a 1/5 billion+ chance that any one person can be it.
Lets say you meet 5000 people in your life that you talk to enough think you may have a connection with (5000 is a ridulously large figure to begin with). That means that you have a 1/1 million chance of finding your one and only soul mate at some stage in your life.
I believe that there a thousands of people out there that each person can have very strong connection with, but even then your chances of finding one is still pretty low.
Food for thought anyway.

I believe that there are heaps of partners for everyone, one of every street so to say. I think the Idea of soulmates is rediculous. Unless you can have heaps of soulmates.

good points royale, and i like how you expressed them. Exactly what I thought initially 'of course they dont exist...' but it is food for thought.

but i know sometimes it gives me great comfort, that despite one day i will be gone from this mortal plane that maybe somebody really really loved me, and i like to cling to that notion for eternity.

isnt that some definition of soulmates ?

1 in 6 billion, eh. Them's good chances.

Sometimes it seems as though the odds are that bad, but in truth is that there are probably hundreds of thousands of people out there that you'd click with well enough to call a soul mate, and that ain't that bad. The trouble is finding said people.

I didn't say they dont exist , just that there is more than one 'potential' soulmate. I guess my thoughts depend on the definition too, if there is only 1, I dont believe, if the term relates to many people then yes I do believe.

I thought I was pretty in love with my ex-gf, however after 4 months going out with a new girl the feeling is totally different.

My current gf is so much more what I am looking for, she fits much better with me for any number of reasons.

I don't believe in soulmates so much, but I do believe there are people out there that will suit you so much more than others. I never really thought I could fall for someone as hard as I have for my current gf. My last relationship was 5 years, so it's not like it was a brief thing.

I would never have even considered this idea before meeting my current gf, so I guess you need to experience it to understand it.

I find the idea of one perfect person for me difficult to fathom. People change and develop in a multitude of way. It is hard to imagine finding somebody who could put up with me at any particular phase of my life, let alone stay along for the entire ride.
Then again, if I could find someone who could do that, then that's a pretty good indicator it is meant to be.

I think Elisha Cuthbert is my soulmate.

Sooooooo hot. Wannnnnnn to touch the heinnny.

I think the whole soulmate thing a bit of a toss really. As has already been mentioned, people change to much and what is compatible at one moment might not be the next.

Lets say your whole life you've been eating from the Kelloggs variety pack. Every day, you have a different cereal. Then you choose one. Just one, and you eat that for the rest of your life. Then you wake up one morning, and you're just not hungry.

What happens then?

I can't get an erection. :(

I thought that was part of the idead of a soul mate, someone who changes and grows with you.

BTW you can see Dr Kellog about that about that erection problem;)

Don't really know about the idea of soul mates.

I think it really depends on how much you are willing to bend for a given person. In my experience, no two people fit together perfectly. There are always clashes of some variety and therefore compromises to be made, if the relationship is to continue.

It all swings on whether you believe that continuing the relationship is worth the compromises needed to keep it going.

I guess that if you find a "soulmate", the compromises always seem insignificant in comparison to the benefits of sharing your life with the right person.

Like I said earlier, I don't believe in soulmates, same as I don't believe in fate.

There is definately omeone out there that will suit you more than anyone else. I don't think it's soulmates, just statistics.

Oh, Whiskers, my parents have been going out since they were 18. So it might be hard to find someone, but definately possible.

i believe that there is just one soulmate for everyone, but not that they dont necessarily have to be a lover. i feel that my bast mate is my soulmate, i love him so much, but not romantically, you know? doesnt mean they wont be a lover though, & i think that there are also people who will come very close to a soulmate, but not quite. i think that makes sense.

I'll put the fact that I'm pagan aside and address this agnostically.

I believe that there is a person out there for everyone (or more than one) that is destined to cross your path for no other reason other than your souls are drawn together through fate.

This person could be gay in this lifetime, romantic relationships are not always the result of these souls interacting, it's about the connection itself.

For example, I believe at this present time I have 2 soulmates in my life, one I have no romantic interest in whatsoever as she's my sister in law, but the connection is almost identical.

The best way to explain it would be that these soulmates are from the same litter (like a cat litter) and the bond has no physical liimits or limits in death.

I don't agree about there only being one, but I do agree that they don't have to be a lover. My mother and I are soul mates. That could just be because we've been together all my life. You have to spend a considerable amount of time with someone before they can be considered a soul mate, otherwise the words become just empty and meaningless in much the same way the word "love" has become.

Statistically speaking, I'm pretty sure my soul mate would either be dead or stuck in a desert somewhere.

I think along the same lines. I read the Celestine Prophecy many years ago and it kind of struck a cord with me.

Basically i believe you meet everyone in your life for a reason. You either meet them because they are meant to pass some knowledge on to you or visa versa.

This knowledge can be good or bad but you learn from it either way and grow.

Exactly. Whether the contact is positive or negative, it stimulates you in some way, shape or form.

i believe everything happens randomly and that humans have a sad tendency to bring 'hidden meaning' to everyday occurences to give them more significance. maybe i have been reading too much on string theory. its no suprise people feel comfortable with others that display similar traits but dont try to read too much into this. you will meet some people in your life you like, and others you dont, i think its that simple.

soul-mate... hrmm... very... silly humans....

sorry, anyway, apart from the fact we are all so retarded for eachother it's not funny, soulmates are one of the finest examples of humans fucking something up:

1) we got all egotistical and though that a soulmate is 1 HUMAN for 1 OTHER HUMAN: clarification bullshit ego wank,
2) soul mates are with us for eternity: well, true and not, explaination later,
3) the bond between soulmates is so powerful it can make eachother do things: WRONG, you're just tuning into each other, that's NOT being a soulmate.

ok, to extend this farther...

as human beings, we must understand, to be soulmates we must understand what a soul is:

spirit extended to soul extended to flesh.

now, to really confuse everyone, I'll explain the above:

to believe in the soulmate, is to believe in the soul, is to believe in the etherial plane... so, now we understand where we are at, or not, we can look at it this way. being that we're spirit (the etherial form) extended to soul (the etherial human form) extended to flesh (the physical form), we can see a small link... but if I were to say that one "spirit" can project into many "souls", then you would maybe understand a bit more of what I am trying to say... this is most difficult over text ;)

so, we are now aware that we are one spirit, extended to many souls, each being extended to a body.

giving us soul mates... these spirits are things like lucifer, azrael, michael, etc... what we deem "angels"...

I suppose a soulmate is merely just another who is linked to the same hub....

though i dont believe there is only one person for you, i believe everyone comes along for a reason, a season, or a lifetime... that being to teach you a lesson, to be with you through a period of your life, or to be with you for your life.

On the topic of odds though, I believe Tim said it best:

"She is one in a million, so there's five more just in New South Wales!"

Yer, i don't know about you, but i've found 5 chicks EVER that were worth dating. Given that i'm currently going out with one, that's 4 that weren't soul mates. I live in South Australia, so technically there'd be around 2. I don't like the odds so far ;)
