I seem to have run into a bit of a problem installing a game for my friend. It's a flight simulator called Tornado and is the oldest of school. (at least I think so). The game is loaded with three floppies, and is started from dos. We've gotten the game to load, but somewhere in the process it fails to detect the mouse drivers, and crashes, reverting back to dos.
I thought it was because the mouse was a USB connection, so I changed it to a standard serial port mouse, but it has continued to crash.
friends computer specs:
1.3 P4
128 RDRAM
Geforce 2 MX
soundblaster live 16bit

Game recommended specs:
80486 33mhz
64K external cache
4mb ram (software disk cache)
soundblaster sound card
16 bit VGA card

I've been messing with the damn thing for a four hours now and I'm stuck. If anybody can tell me WTF I'm doing wrong, I'd be grateful.

*puts on DOS hat*

Run 'edit'.

Do you get a mouse then? If not you'll need to find and run 'mouse.com.'

If you do get a mouse in 'edit', then I have no idea :p

Remember that PS/2 mice are only a few years old too.

Might have to use a com serial mouse.

Well, We tried an ancient com/serial port mouse, and no dice. :(
I would trie blueboys suggestion, but I won't have access to his computer for another day or so. Thanks to ya both, I'll post later with the update. :)

Which operating system are you using? This is pretty important, as if you're using Linux, it's not going to work at all. ^_^

If you're using 2k or XP, it helps to tell us so we know whether or not you need to install a DOS emulator or something.

Sorry- It's a Dell OEM version of XP, I don't remember the Bios version.

thats weird as I installed duke nukem3d a couple of months ago and it worked fine under xp.

Maybe try running it from a batch file and maybe try searching the net for mouse.com and sticking that in the batch file too. Suggest using the serial mouse as well. Dunno if mouse.com will see a usb or ps2 connected mouse.

Have you tried running it in a different "Compatibility Mode" in XP?

Downloaded the Compatibility updates from WindowsUpdate?

Things are kinda hectic around my friends house, because of the kid his GF just had, but I tried switching it to compatibility mode last night. The computer slowed down considerably in the loading screens, and then crashed right after the destop came up. I'll be trying the other suggestions in about an hour. Thanks to all who've helped so far. :)

Create a new partition and install Windows 98 on it, solely for playing old DOS games. If you don't want to use Windows 98, IBM OS/2 Warp 4 is about 150MB and should support it. Not sure if it's got USB drivers though. ^_^
