BlueBoy thought it would be a good idea to get together before christmas.

Let's all put down some ideas.

BlueBoy has suggested 19 December.

I see BlueBoy has got you doing his dirty work! meheheh

I think it's a great idear!

I have a suggestion for all the Melb Zgeeks: bring along all the hawt single women that you and your family and friends know, and bring them along to redress the gender imbalance.

P.S. 'Drinks' doesn't necessarily mean alcohol!

Good idea BlueBoy! That way we can make it an event for those whingers that don't like going to the pub but have never actually organised an event themselves ;)

I will try and bring some friends. Im new meat so you guys will have to take it easy on me.

At the moment christmas drinks is sounding like a cheap nightclub.

From what I have seen here on zgeek, everyone sounds fairly intelligent (i.e top 95% pecentile) and open minded, not like slezy old men in a skanky nightclub.

Will it be afternoon or evening?

Colonel Kurtz
10-11-2003, 03:46 PM
If it's a Friday it will be evening, if a Saturday it will start around lunch at a restaurant/bar and crawl through into the wee small hours.

Don't worry about being fresh meat.

The first meet I went to last year, I went with another bloke from here Royale. When we got to the venue, we realised we knew no-ones names, didn't know what anyone looked like, and had no phone numbers.

We thought great, this will be fun. "Hi we're looking for sperm, tintin and snowball"

We saved ourselves the embarrassment and just looked for a table of geeks. We found 'em. Home at last.

Dude you can check out some of the event galleries for piccies of MelbGeekers, and PM for some numbers for contact. Don't worry, we're pretty friendly here, but you gotta buy the first three rounds.

(OK, I'm kidding about the the friendly bit :D)

Sambellina

A few of us have been chatting and thought this idea sounds like a winner:

Date: Saturday 20 December, lunch time
Place: Batman Park on the corner of Flinders and Spencer street
BBQ: BYO food/drink/boobies

This is probably the best that we can do to please everyone: not a drinking establishment so the non-drinkers don't feel left out; it's BYO food so bring what you can/can't afford; and not a set restaurant so people can't complain about the place.

BlueBoy
10-11-2003, 07:50 PM
We did this at the start of the year, and everyone had a ball.

We can't please everyone, but this comes close. :)

Saturday 20th Dec sounds better. In the park sounds better.

Just from my reading, I dont know if I fit the mould as a geek? No offense intended. But I dont know much about computers or electronics. Everyone sounds as though they are IT professionals or graphic designers. As for me, maybe I am a geek in the academic sense. Or at least I have been called a geek before but more of a biochemistry science geek. This isnt because I have my hair parted down the center like some sort of poindexter either. I can hear you all now, "soooo, what sort of stuff do you make in your lab?" That's my secret and perhaps my buisness :)

I recognise one of the faces in the photos at the Early year zgeek melbourne event.

Question: Which one of the people in the photo, use to work at the Grand Hyatt in melbourne. Is it you blue boy?

Misao, you can feel free to make judgements on the photo attached to my profile to whether I am cute or not, even though I am hiding behind the cute little samoyed. As to whether I have cute friends......the answer is yes but if want to meet any of them you will have to buy some coupons from the front desk. It is 3 coupons per ride

Not me. Don't think I've even stepped in the Grand Hyatt. :p

I think you find that the term 'geek' covers a broad range of people here.

cheers Blue boy. I know I recognise one of the faces. I do understand that "geek" covers a wide variety of people. I have just had bad experiences with net meets. I am not really into net meetings as a result. I went to this get together once with a group years ago I used to hang with on mIRC. When I got there they were all bitching about this and that person. They were having some sort of disagreement with a group of people on-line and were getting so fired up. I just wanted to bitch slap there arses to curb. It was all so real for them but fuck! Hello! You are getting fired up at some 21 fucken inch monitor you spent half your wage on <shakes head> and you know what......I dont give a fuck about how you overclocked your processor. I dont give a fuck about how much ram you have. How about I ram that ram up your arse and overclock you with my overclocked glock.

This is my beef. I dont eat beef I am vegetarian.

I am a bit paranoid that this melbourne meet will be a repeat. I hate to generalise over one or two situations but understand where I am coming from. I really hope it wont be. I do like computers but they arent my life.

To Misao: I wonder if old meat is cute and has some cute friends?

Misao
11-11-2003, 11:09 AM

Don't be paranoid! It's only Snowball that's the boring, bitchy one and he usually gets so drunk you can't understand what he's saying anyway.

How come you recognise him from the Grand Hyatt? Did you work there too?

karmacoma
11-11-2003, 11:39 AM
Yes I worked there say 1990 to 1995 then went to Japan. He will definetly know me by face. I worked in banquets and other areas including the bell desk, max's and security. He may know me as one of the security guys......or maybe from banquets.

Yeah I remember him well now. He was boring and bitchy then. Oh yeah....and drunk

Colonel Kurtz
11-11-2003, 11:42 AM
Actually, we usually talk about ZGeek for an hour or so, and then proceed to get horribly drunk and talk about all the things everyone usually talks about when drunk.

We do different activities too, eg go-karting.

Saturday 20th sounds like a winner.

I'm sure that would be appreciated.

The whole Santa costume thing is meant to be a tongue-in-cheek ridiculing of the commercialism of Christmas, not intended to be taken literally! Plus it's a load of fun!

Have a look at the fun these people (http://www.santarchy.com/) seem to be having!

Specifically, this (http://crash.ihug.co.nz/%7Emarshall/santarchy.html) is what I got up to the last time I did the Santa suit thing.

No problem for me on the 13th. In fact I suspect this may be a better day for everyone as on the 20th there will probably be more competition with family/work Xmas parties. Sambellina's plan to get in on a bbq early seems sensible, although I'd prolly prefer not to be out in the sun at that time of day.

What do other ppl think of the 13th?

I have been thinking of making a ZGeek banner ad for this bbq. Should boost attendance. What do you guys think?

Just ask ppl where Batman Park is. Nobody will know. Then ask them where the yellow peril used to be, then ask them where it was after that, but not where it is now. Comprehende?

Well, it's about time I turned up to one of these meets again. *grin*
How long is it going for? I'm knocking off work at 2, so I could be there by around 3-ish if I rushed. If you're all still there.

Thought you'd died. :)

We should still all be there at that point.

Replace the word "dead" with "trying to keep two jobs and haven't left the home lately because he's busy as all hell now", and you'd be right. *grin* I'll be there at 3.
