I have a monitor that enjoys going technicolour. A simple degauss fixes it, but it's doing this rather regularly. I've never seen a monitor do it of its own accord, only on purpose when playing with magnets around a monitor.
Does this mean it's dieing? Anything I can do to prolong it's life, or am I stuck with just replacing it?
It's a mac monitor which makes things fun, only way to degauss is turn it off/on, or through the software (Apple -> Control Panels -> Monitor -> graphics -> degauss button).

I think the probable is just old age but there might be a (stronger than normal) magnetic field going through your monitor. My old place had that and it left a permanent mark in the monitor (exactly same symptoms as with yours).
So you could try adjusting the position a bit (or shielding it with a big metal box :p).

The internal degauss button on a monitor is not that good. You could try taking it to a TV repair dude and asking him to wave his degauss wand at it. Shouldn't cost you more than $10.

it doesn't seem like the guns or anything... might just be old as druid said... however, there is something you can try...
if you know someone with a proper degausing gun (they are hard to find and somewhat expensive from what I hear), just give it a "spray" so to speak and it should be as good as new... internal degauses are meant to be preventative/temp fixes for discolourations on screens. A real degausing treatment should bring it back to near new.
