i have a laptop running xp with 2 usb ports that support 2.0. ive been using 1.1 devices until i needed a new external hdd that is 2.0 but for some reason the system will only connect it at low speed. i get the warning from xp that a high speed device is connected to a low speed hub and to change it to the other connection but when i do i still get the same message.

i have removed all the 1.1 devices, swapped between the 2 ports numerous times, uninstalled and reinstalled all the usb drivers but the hdd refuses to connect at high speed. the funny think is it shows a 5 port high speed hub but i only have 2 ports. anyone have any ideas?

Does it show that in system manager? If you open the usb controllers do you see a usb 2.0 root hub device or such like?

Maybe the motherboard in the laptop has more functions than the laptop is offering you.

Example: I have a motherboard that has two sets of usb, ones usb2.0 the other is usb 1.1
The usb1.1 are hard connected to the board, but the 2.0 requires you to attach connectors to them.

Have you got any other 2.0 devices you can try?

Do you know what chip set it is. i know my mothers laptop that had a nvidia chipset had issues with it. Also the nforce series of drivers had probs.

What Service pack of Xp are you running?

I suggest check for new drivers, especially on the hdd manufacturer's side. Also Microsoft might have something.

You want to be running SP1 and also, as nexus said, the nforce mainboards come with drivers and a little fix that need to be installed for USB2.0 under XP.

Have a look on windows update (non critical updates I think) for a usb2.0 patch.

Other than that you may need to install a usb2.0 driver for your motherboard. Don't really know if this will exist for the laptop but those were the 2 things I needed to do to get 2.0 to work on my desktop.

Check the BIOS revision and update from the compaq/hp website. I've played on quite a few of these, did not remember them being USB2.0, I thought this only came in with the n1020v's, i might be wrong though.

The n1000v's that I have played with almost always needed a BIOS update when they arrived.

The other thing, don't know if it will work or not, Adaptec have a cool little USB app that is like a USB diagnostic. Have a look on the website, it came with an Adaptec PCI USB card...

i have given up on this, tried everthing that compaq have suggested, the next step will be trying maxtor, altho i may just rebuild the system when i get a chance.
