I have a couple of movies which when trying to play do the looking to download codec crap and play but do not have sound.

What I am looking for is a way/tool to be able to tell me what audio and video codec a movie is using? Also I would like something to be able to tell me what codecs are installed on my pc.

Anyone know one?

GSpot (http://www.headbands.com/gspot/) is pretty nifty.

Right clicking the file and looking at the properties should tell you the FourCC code , which will say "divx" "xvid" "div3.11" e.t.c

If your having trouble with codecs.. delete the mofo... if its not in scene standards its probably crap.

I find the nemo codec fixes most problems.... it has almost everything.....

BUT
make sure:
a) you dont install the M-400 fix unless you run a Matrox M-400 (it goes all purple and funny... kinda like dropping acid, freaked me first time).
b) you dont install the DIVX or any others that you have the latest version of

just thought this would help....

I use AviCodec (http://avicodec.duby.info/) . Works like a charm. :)

While not strictly on topic (hasn't the original question been answered), a good pack of codecs that I use is the Defilerpak (http://hellninjacommando.com/defilerpak/). It's pretty much everything I need. I haven't had to download a new codec since installing this.

Thanks for all the info, i'll look into this tonight.

Generally I only install the divx and xvid codec for video and mp4 for sound. But since I had a couple of good quality movies that don't work I went mad and installed the nimo codec pack and some other one. Still no luck.

I'll give gspot and avicodec a look at, hopefully they will sort things out.

Ha get this. I used the gspot tool and it said that audio was using the ac3 codec which was installed on my pc. So I downloaded the nimo5beta9 pack and all is well.

Ta for the help.
