I have had a lot of success with WinMX and Kazaa, but install Kazaa Diet as well, this helps reduce the extra stuff.

WinMX had no additional stuff that I found...

i use kazaa lite (http://www.kazaa-lite.tk), limewire (http://www.limewire.com) (if it's not on kazaa) and winmx (http://www.winmx.com) (if it's not on either of them).

an external hd and some very generous friends also help ;)

I agree.

I'd go for kazaa lite for the gf. Best thing about it is no adware or spyware, plus there are usually a couple of million people on-line so you usually get what you want.

Easy to use as well for the not so computer literate.
