View Full Version : Right clicking on files makes explorer.exe crash.

I installed the TomaWeb FTP Uploader a few days ago on my Windows 2000 installation and whenever I go to right click a file, it works perfectly. However, if someone else on the computer goes to right click on a file, explorer.exe goes ballistic and crashes itself. I suspect that TomaWeb's shell integration is the cause of this and that it's not appearing under other accounts.
I tried installing it as one of the other users but I got a crapload of empty/nonsense errors and it refused to install. Short of giving everyone administrator priveleges and then installing the program for them (fingers crossed) or uninstalling it, is there anything I can do to stop these crashes?

To solve various Windows problems, someone here once advised to install Linux. I can't remember who it was.

Off-topic nonsense stops here.

I would first look in event viewer and see if it is giving any useful messages.
Also just a maybe but try reinstalling the Windows service pack.

Which one? I'm running Windows 2000 Service Pack 4.

I think you've already hit the nail on the head with this one Utop. Installed it under your user account, but the others don't have enough access to modify the registry - this program puts stuff under HKey_Current_User, so when someone else first logs in it needs to do the same changes for that person, it can't, it's too stupid to do without the changes, so it crashes Explorer when they right click.
Either giving them admin & installing it for them, or giving them registry modification permission and re-installing it for them seems to be the only way to go (I'm assuming it would have only tried to make the appropriate changes on their first login after install, so now they've already logged in that'll probably be the only way).

Yep that one. Only a guess though. If anything goes wrong for me I usually reinstall the service pack.
Another idea I just had was to see what it is putting in the registry under hkcu and export that into a reg file. Then login as each other user and get them to install that. That should in theory give them all the crap they need. Also check if it is copying any files into their profile folder. This will need this copied in as well if it is doing this.
If all else fails ill do a snapshot of the app and see what it is doing if you want. Hehe that is what I do for a job atm. distribute applications across a corp network.

Thanks for the help, the registry file idea sounds like a good one.
