View Full Version : What is your favourite colour, and why?

I was thinking about my favourite colour the other day, at the time my favourite colour was blue. Then I began to question that, did I think that my favourite colour was blue just because I'm a boy and thats my socially accectable colour. How do I choose one colour from the myriad avaliable.
If I go and buy new clothes, or a car, I'm really not interested in what colour it is, because to me a colour is simply that, a colour. I asked my fried what his favourite colour was and he said 'red', the reason being that to him red is passion, love, hate, blood, rage, intensity. To him red had a meaning. I've never thought about colours in that light.
Does colour hold any significance or sway in your life?

How odd that I happened to be reading this thread while choosing a colour scheme for my new Winamp skin? Red does have a meaning, according to that paint add it incites passion. Also, thinkof all the things that are red, heaps of things, so red represents all of those things and works on the more primal parts of the brain to associate other feelings and emotions with it.
Red is my favorite colour.
I read in the book Peoplewatching that red lipstick turns men on because the labia (other lips) turn red when a woman is sexually aroused, and the lipstick is symbolising that. How cool!

I don't really have a favourite colour. To say I do would be a lie as my preference is constantly change, a mood thing I guess. All goes down really to the shade of particular colours.

Black is actually not a colour, it's the absence of colour, however in fabrics a true black pigment is not possible, often it's actually extremely dark shades of green or a colour that is purple when it fades.
My favourite colour used to be green, I think it was more logic than asthetics, the human eye sees more shades of green than it can of any other colour, also green light apparently travels the greatest distance.
Now I'm quite fond of blues, reds, Purples & similar but I don't know why.

partially for practical reasons, my eye is wierd (the one that functions) and bright colors wither distract me, or just drive me nuts. I'm not a light lover. I look gay in red.

the color we see is what we get from the reflections of the objects around us. While we look at an apple and see it is red, it is in reality everything but red, since it absorbs all colors but those wavelengths we percieve as red and reflects them back. by extension, something that is white thusly would have no color since it reflects everything back, and black would be all colors since it keeps them all, which would explain why black objects heat up much more rapidly in the sun than white objects.
on top of that, all colors have an opposite color, red for green, etc, thus if white is a color, its opposite would be black which would by definition have to be a color.

But not because of that reason.

Did you know that the makeup of butterfly wings is such that instead of reflecting all other colours except that which you see, the wing is actually made up of prisims which channel the light and bounce back the colour you see. In effect, it's the opposite way colours normally work.
I thought that white was all colours, taking that from the experiment we did as kids with the colour wheel, spin a wheel full of colours fast enough, and you get white.

It depends on if you're doing additive or subtractive blends. Light is additive, but art (paint) is subtractive. When you shine a red light and a green light on a white surface you get yellow. When you mix red and green paint you get brown.
It's all to do with the way colour is mixed.
Subtractive blending works by the object reflecting only certain wavelengths of light. The three primary colours are red, blue and green (shut up, it is not yellow; the only reason yellow is a "primary" colour is because it can't be made by mixing other colours in art). Something red only reflects the "red" wavelengths, something green will only reflect those colours that contain green wavelengths. Something brown reflects those colours that are common to red and green, we call these "brown".
Additive blending works by starting with nothing and adding extra wavelengths to it. HTML colour codes are additive. Using the RRGGBB standard, red is #FF0000, green is #00FF00 and blue is #0000FF. Red + Green = #FFFF00 which is yellow. Red + Blue = #FF00FF which is Magenta. Blue + Green = #00FFFF which is Cyan.
When you print something from a computer, it will either use RGB ink or CMYK ink (the K is black). The different colour schemes depend on which way the ink is being blended, Additively or Subtractively.
And who said art had nothing to do with science? ;)

My favourite colours...well Blue is my favourite..always has been, though, these days I must say my favourite colours depend on my mood. I've started to take a liking to Red, do like wearing white as it complements my dark skin,(but never wear it when Im eating...always spill something on it), some shades of purple and green (even though I think it makes me look like a tree), I like tan, but not brown (too much brown, makes me look like a tree trunk)...thats about it though, I do have mostly black pants and wear coloured shirts...

No. I'm talking about colour blending, not the non-existance of negative numbers.
Additive blending is when you start with nothing and add light to it. Subtractive blending is when you start with everything and subtract wavelengths of light.

My fav colour is a burnt orange. Almost exactly like the colour the monaro is painted. Other than that I love blue because of the ocean and sky and green because of the bush. Both those places make me feel good. Now the ultimate would be me sitting in an orange manaro sitting in the bush by the ocean on a cloudless day.. ahhh bliss.

I thought about painting a 90% gray or clear stripe across my car. The clear would just kind of have to reflect the light differently. Sound good? If so, don't steal my idea!!!!!

'cos it's close to grey which is the colour of concrete (where I drive it most, around grey concrete buildings and roads) and it reflects everything else around it, thus, it "changes to" (or more accurately reflects the' colours around it to match the enviroment it's driving through

Purple has been my undisputed favourite colour for over 13 years. I just suddenly realised one day (about 13 years ago) that I owned heaps and heaps of purple things, and if given a choice of buying an article in a range of colours, I would always go for purple. So it's hard to define WHY it's my favourite, coz I never consciously chose it. I continue to like it though because it's rich and decadent and passionate.
As for meaning... somebody told me years later that purple represents sexual frustration. Which would have been very apt at the time, as I was a virgin. But even during the periods in my life when I've been gettin' plenty, purple has remained my favourite. Which says to me that it more accurately represents lust.... that would make a lot of sense.
Dark Emerald Green
Almost-Moroon Dark Red
Dark Purple
Burnt Orange
Um, there seems to be a pattern there :)
Oh yeah, and really don't like blue for some reason. Or yellow for that matter....
Brown
Because it's so damn funny. Brown. Hehe.
And Feryl's post got me googling for colour meanings. I only got any meaningful links when I removed the 'u''s from both favourite and colour ..grumble grumble..
