i got a 21' monitor at a used computer bits and pieces sale, and it works fine, but it looks like the images that it shows are mirrored four or five pixels over, so that 'hello' looks like 'helloooo', with the o's overlapping a little bit..
is there anything that i can do to fix this problem, or will i have to take it to a professional?

are you sure it's the actual monitor that's playing up, and not just an incompatible setting in your video drivers?
try taking a screenshot of it :D

nope.. looks just fine on my laptop when i took the screenshot..
i'm running it as an external monitor off of my laptop, if that changes anything around..
i'm nearly positive that it's hardware or magnets or something-related, though...

yep.. i just degaussed again, and i'm running 1280 x 1024 @ 16 bit color, 85 hz (any less makes my eyes hurt)
it's on an S3 SuperSavage IV with 16mb ram, if that helps anyone with the diagnosis..

You really need to try it on another computer. Taking a screen shot tells nothing. When you have tried it on another computer it will tell you if your notebook is rooted or your screen is.

it works fine on another computer, so it's gotta be a monitor problem, but it's been on for a few days, and it's looking a bit better, although some things are still pretty bad.. horizontal lines aren't exactly it's forte, but it's not echoing on text anymore..
if it's not any better in a few weeks of being on constantly, i'll take it to a technician and have him take a poke at it..
thanks for you help, everone :)

Works fine on another computer and it's a monitor problem???
From the way you've worded that, it sounds more like the vidcard in the notebook is at fault.
Try a different monitor. See what that does.

Sounds like the connection is dodgy.
My first thought was that it was ghosting and that the magnets in the monitor were fucked. Are there any speakers near where it is plugged in with the other computer? Or a microwave or anything?

Could also be another likely explanation.
A friends' 17" monitor used to play up ... he then moved and the problem seemed to solve itself. We figured that, being against a wall, there is something electrical in the wall that was causing the problem.
OK, edit to my last post ... move the laptop to another monitor at another location, try that.
If it works there, move it back to that lcoation and see what happens.
You've then isolated your cause.
