Video camera recommendations?

I'm considering purchasing a video camera but have no idea where to start. I was going to purchase a digital camera but considering most video cameras take digital photos it seems to be the best idea. Budget is <$1,000.

Yet to see a video camera do as good a still as a dedicated digital still camera unless you are spending big $$$. Plus keep in mind the video camera is a lot bulkier.

I am bias and would say get a Sony, but thats is just me.
