can anyone recommend a place to go to get the windows tinted for my beetle?
i'm gonna be going for some darkest legal action, and i thought it might be a good idea to take the glass to them while it's out of the car.

I put Solace F1 tints on my car. Not sure if they're "darkest legal", but they are top of the range and I've had a good track record with the brand's products (3 previous cars, with no problems with the tints ever, and used various products).
They're also the OEM tinting for some large car companies (like BMW and Mercedes that I'm aware of, and undoubtedly some Japanese and local brands).
is that self install stuff or did you have that done for you?

They did it for me. I got a 10% discount out of an NRMA Open Road magazine; not sure if there's any other deals going on at the moment.
The nearest one is actually quite close to your work (relatively speaking, its not walking distance by any geek standards).
