I currently have the problem of my PC running at 50 degrees or higher shortly after I start it up... I keep putting off buying something other than the stock standard fan my AMD xp 2000+ has on it... but this summer and some planned upgrading has made it a necessity.

I was considering getting a Cooler Master Aero 7+ on the recommendation of a few friends... But I've also had a few friends say that this funky looking fan has managed to crush their CPU. Anyone know/heard anything about this?

And does anyone else have any other recommendations?

Buy a Zalman cooler, they're efficient and dead quiet.

I'm running an Athlon XP 2800+ with a Zalman CNPS-6000 AlCu. I bit heavy though, so if you move your machine around lots make sure to lie it down while in transit.

I've heard the Aero 7+ is a tad on the loud side.

If you're worried about it crushing your chips core, consider buying a shim. A shim is a little piece of copper that sits on top of the chip - it improves the cooling very slightly, but reduces the chances of your HSF crushing the core.

As for running at 50 degrees, that's no biggie. Different boards measure the temp differently. Mine claims I'm running at 62 right now, and I've seen it pass 70 plenty of times. Athlons run hot anyways.

I'm running a Vantec Aeroflow VA4-C7040 cooler on an Athlon XP 2400+ chip.

Previously had a Thermaltake Volcano 9.

No problems with either save for the fact that the Volcano 9 sounds like a hurricane.

I'm using the Zalman as well. I've only got nice things totsay about it. I haven't had any problems carting it around vertically.

They are very funky looking as well. :D

Forgot to mention, I'm so impressed with the Zalman I've got 3 of the suckers (my machine, my Home Theatre PC (http://www.lurgen.com/toys/htpc/) and the GF's machine. They're all I'd buy now).

I'm going to be buying a Zalman heat-pipe cooler for my video card in a week or two, the fan on my current card is dying a slow painful (and loud) death.

If you're looking for a good heatsink, i recommend a Thermalright (http://www.thermalright.com/). I've got the SLK-800. It weighs over half a kilo. And coupled with a delta fan, it makes a very good cooler. High performance Delta fans make ALOT of noise. But if you have an asus mobo with Q-fan, the noise is extremely reduced by lowering the speed while your CPU is under 45C. I never reach that unless its a hot day and i'm using 100% CPU.

I reckon go for the Thermalright SP97 (http://www.systemcooling.com/modules.php?name=News&file=article&sid=1464) with a quiet 92mm fan. A large fan spinning at a slow rate is much quiter than a small high speed one and moves the same amount of air

Aero 7 heatsinks don't crush CPUs, idiots crush CPUs.

I have no idea what fan I am running other than it is very loud :). Anyways just make sure you use the arctic silver heat sink compound. I'd actually try this first before getting a new fan. Buy just doing this it dropped my temperature by 10ish degrees Also as long as the temperature does not go over 60 degrees on a really hot day its fine.

[looks at monitoring software] Currently a nice ambient 71 degrees celcius.

But then again, my HSF is VERY loose. Might walk up the road today now that computer stores will be open again & get some new thermal gell, reseat my HSF. I know that's what the problem is because if you take the lid off the case, stick your hand in there, you can twist the HSF with little to no effort. That == BAAAD.

Purchased some new thermal paste (arctic silver). Took HSF & CPU out, cleaned both with a soft paper towel to remove the old thermal paste. Put enough on to cover the CPU only, put it all back in, I'm at 69 degrees (usually closer to 74 by this stage going by how hot I feel). I've saved 5 degrees. Any other ideas?

(Reminder: CPU is at full load as I'm always running seti).

don't run the cpu at full load? :P

on my sisters duron, it used to run so hot, so i got a thermaltake volcano 9, it STILL ran stupidly hot, so i got that artic silver stuff,,,, no more problems, now runs 40ish, was previous 70 under hardly any load,

since you've done stuff like that already........no idea :P

Ideally, you only want enough paste to cover the core itself with a thin layer. Too much is as bad as not enough.

You should find that arctic silver takes a day or two to "bed in". Cooling should improve by a few degrees gradually. There is a very good tutorial on their website showing how much to apply, and where to put it.

Temperature isn't really a good indication that your CPU is too hot - since all boards are wildly inacurate the best indication that it's too hot is instability or inaccuracy. To test the second of these try running prime95 for a few days straight. This program calculates values of large prime numbers, and compares them to known results, revealing calculating errors under load. I run it for at least 72 hours straight on every new machine I build for home, and if a machine fails (hasn't happened in a long time) I take a good hard look at cooling, memory and the CPU itself.

my artic silver worked instantly, and by cramming the chip on tightly the shitloads i put on all got squeezed out so it's perfect :D

Found another computer shop in Narrabin ave(?) that was open. Was just hte "ceramique" stuff by arctic silver that I got ... with thermal pastes, from what I've seen it's not so much which one y ou get but more whether you apply it right. I put on more than the guide Lurgen mentioned, but wasn't overboard.

I always check eyo.com.au, but usually take a drive to Parramatta for my gear. There's a bunch of cool little shops on George St that are pretty cheap and have a great selection.

Anyway, back on topic, If you're running an AMD chip, the majority of the time you should get used to temps between 40 and 60 degrees (depending on ambient temp and load).
I'm running an XP2200 (the last chip in it's core range) and it runs pretty hot. When I got the chip I got a massive Evercool cooler, which kept the temps at resonable levels.
Unfortunately, it sounded like I had an F111 in my office, and I started searching for a quieter solution.
After looking at a bunch of heatpipe and waterblock solutions, I stumbled across the Zalman 6000Cu and bought one for $65.
I can honestly say that i'll never go back to a conventional HSF - it's whisper quiet when the fan's at it's minimum spin (about 1400rpm) and at max (2500rpm) is only as noisy as my case fans.
Eventually i'm planning on getting a XP2800, which runs cooler than the XP2200, so i'll be able to run at minimum rpms all the time :)

All I can say is: If you can find one, get one.

I head that way all the time (being that I live in Granville)... What shops do you usually go to?

Well, unfortunately I don't know the names of most of them... I just know where they are...

There's Zip Computers ( http://www.zipcomputers.com.au/ ), which is where I usually start and where i usually finish - their prices are usually the best in the area

Parramatta Computers is in a little arcade just around the corner (run by a little Korean guy who has an unnatural love for AMD's) which is where i got my Zalman Cooler. usually a bit more expensive than zip, but sometimes have stuff that zip doesn't have

There's one more that is pretty good, but usually has a limited supply. He does, however, always seem to have an overabundance of cases. The other one to note is up on Horwood place... their prices are shitty and they never have any stock other than the usual "we foist crappy outdated hardware on to idiot businesspeople for rediculous prices" stuff.

If you get really desperate and don't mind being ripped off, you can try Harris :D

Next on my list is a Sonata Case (http://www.antec-inc.com/pro_details_enclosure.php?ProdID=15138)

just get the aero 7+.

it brought my idle temp down from the stock cooling on my athloon xp 2000+ from around 57 to the low 30s.

Ecom Computers? (http://www.ecomcomputers.com.au/)
I usually head there. The guy was nice about ordering in my natural keyboard for me, and gave me a discount once he'd gotten it in because the price he originally quoted was lower than what he ended up getting it in for.

And he does not treat me like an idiot like the arseholes at Arc computers have in the past.

so fucking agree. i go to the guy "i need a new hsf for my graphics card"

he goes out the back and gets a magazine out and goes "something like this"

i go 'you have it in stock', he just looks at me like i dribbled all over the shop and stuck a fork in my eye and goes "no and we wont order it in untill monday"

i was thinking about yelling a bunch of acronyms at him and walking out but i had too much pride... grrr :swear:

Since you are the starter of this thread: If you want to. :) In general threads are allowed to go a bit off topic, also here (in spite of my pedantism.)

You being the starter of this thread, if you think your question has been answered and don't mind the extra noise you guys can rant (to a reasonable, justified amount) of computer stores here. Try to keep the posts informative and to the point though, that way they will serve as a good warning to others.

If y'all can satisfy the above criteria then you are welcome to continue here, with my exceptional blessing. :p

A bunch of acronyms?

I remember going to MPU, and needing to buy some ram + a network card (both happened to die that day). One guy looked at me like I had grown a second head, the other guy actually treated me with a little bit of respect.

Sometimes its fun being female and buying computer parts.... Sometimes its just depressing.
