We're having problems with our laptop. We turn it on and a message come up saying:

"Ready for BIOS update. Place the BIOS update diskette in the drive, and press any key when ready to proceed."

This is all it does. Now the problem is, we don't have a BIOS diskette (or a diskette drive for that matter). Can anyone help? Stocking is going nuts without her games!

Thanks, man, that'd be cool. It's a Toshiba Tecra, not sure of the model number. But we don't have a floppy drive, just a CD drive. This problem has happened before - black screen with a message, but last time Stocking's brother just said to turn it off, remove the battery, replace the battery and turn it back on. That worked.

in that case then i dont know if it will take the update from a cd, depends if it boots from cd and even then im not sure.

id need to know the model to give it a try. maybe leave the battery out for an hour or so.

thanks. and asmo has suggested opening it up and "popping out the cmos battery", whatever that means and however you do that.

yes, my hardware skillz are very un1337...

it may need a replacement battery, youd have to unscrew it and i wouldnt recommend it if you arent 1337.

try the cd, if that fails (i think it may) then you can hunt down a battery and i can show you how to replace it.

check the keyboard. to get the keyboard bios or normal bios like that, you have to hold on the esc or f1 key at boot up.

the key may be stuck down or shorted.

Hopefully you have better luck with your tecra. At my sisters 18th we used my satellite as a jukebox, wrapped the keyboard in glad wrap, put a towel over the keyboard, closed the screen and put a towel over it. At about midnight i could hear this beeping noise, walked in and saw it opened, cling wrap ripped off and a message saying something like "Waiting for KBC update, please insert diskette".
I got it to boot to safe mode once putting a start up disk i, but after that nothing. Pulled the keyboard out and there was beer everywhere.
I had to send it to danka in sydney where they replaced the keyboard and cleaned all the beer out. Cost about $200 all up

(sorry to be soo long winded, im still sour about it, cos we never caught the fucker)
