Hey guys
I'm shopping for a good firewall appliance. I have tested the Symantec gear and its ok but not great.
What experiences has everyone had with firewall appliaces - any recomendations or gotcha I should know about? (The first person who says to install a linux distro will have his email addy sent to sun0l... :p )

Do you get the distinct feeling by the lack of responses that the Linux is the way to go? Works a treat at my office.
Send this to Sunol

Thanks for the help guys - I'm running a debian system until I complete a bit more research...
In other words I've decided on a S/W Linux Firewall.. .:)

To be honest, almost all of the dedicated firewall boxes are running a cut-down verison of Linux anyway..
But in particular, the WatchGuard Soho boxes are brilliant for the enterprise, and have just about everything that one could want.

If for your own use, I would use The Pix 501 (http://www.cisco.com/warp/public/cc/pd/fw/sqfw500/prodlit/px501_ds.htm)
If for work, then prolly this one would be the right size (http://www.cisco.com/warp/public/cc/pd/fw/sqfw500/prodlit/p506e_ds.htm)

Generally speaking, Watchguard make some excellent firewalls that are (with a little training and reading) easily managed by a single person. I've had experience with a number of their products, and have been pretty happy with 'em.
On the other hand, I avoid SonicWall products like the plague. Sure, I know that the integrity of a firewall is mostly up to the guy who sets it up but I had an awful experience with one of these that left me wondering what on earth they could have been thinking...
