I'm pretty sure that we have rats in our roof what with them gaining access to our house outside my bedroom window up a drainpipe and i can here the bastards gnawing away at the wall when i'm going to sleep and running round in the roof.

Basically i'm asking how to deter, kill the buggers?

Rat Baits = Kill them pretty slowly and painfully (Diaeretic) but effective if they eat the bait. Also kill household pets though and native animals like possums

Traps = If they get the rat on the neck it's pretty instant but mostly they dir from blood loss/exposure of starvation as it's not accurate and usually will just trap them but not kill them.

I guess you'll have to choose one or the other. Or you could lure them out at night with food, find out where they get in and seal up the hole. I do that for possums.

Talon- available in supermarkets.
Better than Ratsak as the buggers can become immune to Warfarin.
Also, it makes them thirsty, so they go outside to die.

Diaeretic's basically dry out the body. Hence why they're so thirsty. it's a shocking way to die. Even for a rat.
But it's better than what they were doing to those cats in asia recently.

Agreed.
You either kill them or pat them.
My choice is made.

Strongly recommend the trap method as the little buggers crawl away to die if you poison them and you won't find it until it starts to smell- not pleasant, believe me. Don't use cheese, a bit of jam or honey on a small piece of cracker biscuit jammed under the fins of the trap plate usually does the trick. Oh, and be very careful when you set it; preferably get someone else to do it as it is a lot less painful (and far more amusing) when the trap springs prematurely on somebody else's fingers!

Physically trapping them is difficult.
Once a trap has caught a rat, other rats won't return to the trap until all scent has gone.
(A rat told me this!):)

Put them through a cardboad tube into your anus and wait for them to stop moving.

.

Rat Baits also cause victims to "Bleed out", Rats are clever, if you poison them they'll dig for black clay, black clay with absorb the poison.

It isn't through diuresis but due to the anticoagulant ingredients in the bait. The rat's blood loses its ability to clot so the rat's circulatory system disintegrates, starting at the capilliaries; they then bleed to death. You can get single dose or multi-dose anticoagulant baits.

There are others which cause neurotoxic reactions and another which raise blood calcium levels such that the animal dies.

But there's nothing like the satisfaction of seeing the fucker dead in a trap. The characteristic "snap" of it going off is also music to the rat-infested. I caught 3 with the same piece of vegetarian lasagne in four nights.

When I was younger I had to do this a few times. Let me recommend NOT catching them alive (under any circumstances). KIlling a rat trapped in a cage is a sickening experience and I don't recommend it. No matter how you kill em after that it's horrible.

A trap sounds th go though. A trap which catches them alive can be used on them repeatedly but the one's that kill them you may have to wash/soak or something before another use.

Good luck.
Oh yeah forgot the number 1 method. Get yourself a Female Cat. Make it hang out with a tom. Once it's had kittens it'll hunt like crazy in an attempt to teach the kittens. This is the never fail method i used in the end. My cat was catching rats bigger than it was.

Yeah, but do you know what a pain in the ass it is having to set traps for all of those kittens you end up with??? :D

Clearly the best solution is to get a cat and put the cheese on the rats.

We have been infested with rats and mice a couple of times and what we do is just use ratsack. Ususally we buy about two packets of baits and put them everywhere. Basically I say bugger what happens as long as they are all gone. Hehe we also aquired a cat.

Yeah top idea, bit messy though but if you had a cat it could help clean up.

I have found this method to be very effective but a little too noisy and destructive.
Try a .22 with sparrow shot, much quieter and doesnt rip big chunks out whatever is behind the rat. :p

years and years ago our next door neighbour and my dad caught a huge rat that was hassling the local cats and dogs, apparently it was huge. Some how they got it into a sack and dad beat the shit out of the sack with a shovel. Once he also caught a ferrel cat and hit it over the hed with a shovel. And if i ever messed up at school he'd trap me and hit me over the head with a shovel. My dad likes to hit things over the head witha a shovel

Well they got the food from the traps, but they haven't surfaced since then, so I assume the human scent scared em off.

how about putting rat poison onto a rat trap BWHAHAHAHAHA then it either steals it and dies or get SPLATTTTTTTTTTTTED erm *is done

when we first moved into my old house my cat caught like several mice a day till they where all gone. cats are good

We have had this problem in the past. It was solved by figuring out:

1. What time the rats entered and left the house, and

2. What their access route is.

Then go and block off the access route (maybe with mesh/chicken wire if it is a drain), when the rats are out.

A cat would be a good idea. Perhaps your neighbours could help out with this. CMYK is correct about the anti-coagulant poisons (such as Ratsak (Warfarin)). The rats eat it and die from internal bleeding. This could leave you with dead rat in your ceiling, which is fine if you don't know about it heheh.

Getting a decent cat could help. I don't know if rat traps kill rats in the same way mouse traps kill mice. In my experience rats are very sturdily built and would be hard to kill in such a way.

Personally, I employ a number of methods to kill my rats. Sometimes I pick the rat up by the tail then smash its head on a hard bench, then cut its throat with a scalpel blade to drain the blood, or crack its neck using a heavy metal rod. Other times I give a very high dose of injected anaesthetic and guillotine its head off. I don't do carbon dioxide gassing any more. Sometimes I give a high dose of injected anaesthetic then pump formaldehyde in its aorta through the heart. Then I put the body in a ratbag.

Hope that is of some use.

Rats eat anything but before train stations, bins and your roof they probably ate shit easily found in nature - grains and similar.

I suggest this proven technique.

Get a slice of bread and squash it till it is a solid piece.
stick it to the trigger of the trap.
cover it with peanut butter.

The last time i did this it took under 10 mins to get the bastard after I placed it. Mice and rats seem to like peanut butter and it helps the bread stick to the trap reducing the chance of stolen baits.

If the fucker is big - tie the trap to something. I have seem one of them escape with a trap wrapped around their head.
