a floppy drive is a useful data recovery device for data on a floppy.

depends if the files have only been deleted (easy job), or if the disk is actually damaged.
depending on the damage, i.e you have only lost the File-Attribute-Table (is there two copies on floppies too?) you may be able to recover something with fancy software.
Failing that, look more closely at the computer she worked on, sometimes some program (word etc) make temporary files strewn on the hard disk that may contain text fragments and you might be able to recover something.
Personally I thinj you are screwed (thats what girlfriends are for!)

The file was not deleted.

Likely.

Apparently she was on a College machine. She asked the network administrators for help... and they said that Word's temp/ backup features had been removed.

Not until I find her data >_<

Well I'm all for helping you with that !!
I've managed in my adventures to pickup "Recover4all.Professional.v2.21.Cracked" its fairly small (<500k) but its worked well for me in the past, even on zip disks and the like.
I think it can do cluster recoveries, because after it does the usual "find files deleted" it does a deeper scan for directory/file deletions that most programs cant normally recover.
pm your email and I'll send it over.
make sure you have a rar decompressor !
:D
Failing that, you could always resort to hand-backups ;)

Update:
In the end, I used an application called 'Undisker'. The Floppy had a fair-few corrupt sectors.
Undisker let me extract the documents raw.
Happy Girlfriend :p
