One of my work mates just had the RPC box come up on his machine. We figured that Nortons muffed up and a regular blaster style worm was weaving its magic. That was untill during the clean up process his HDD was corrupted beyond recovery. Coincedence or new killer payload?

I had a battle with blaster on my machine and i managed to beat it into submission, but it's cowering int eh System Volume Information directory and i canna get it out of there, at least it's harmless
but AVG pops up now and then and has a veritable orgasm as it goes "OMG you got virus!" and i'm like, yeah derrrrrrr!

I answered this in the other thread a couple of days ago, the problem is that windows locks the files in that directory so that it can perform a system restore if you fux0r something.
Disable System Restore from Control Panel -> System Properties, then do a full virus scan, then enable system restore again if you so wish.
