I took this photo a few weeks ago and have been using it as my wallpaper ever since. It's of a stretch of the Arbor Walk at the South Bank Parklands in South Brisbane. Thingy told me to put a full image here because he likes it.

This thread is inpsired by Utopian's thread about a picture he took. I created this thread because I liked the idea and so there is somewhere specific for people to post pictures they have taken and for other people to leave feedback, tips or praise. Try not to make the pics to big, 640x480 or 800x600 is good. If you have a higher res version of the pic make your pic a link to it. Make sure you explain where/why you took the pic, it will make it more interesting for the rest of us.
To start it off here is a pic i took of a frog on a post in front of the dam at my house, i took the pic on Christmas day 2002 when i was bored. I used a Finepix S602 on super macro mode.

I'm not explaining all of those pics because it would take me forever. Sufficeth to say, most of them were taken in Europe (Italy, Germany, France, and Switzerland, in no particular order) during 2001. All available in 2043xsomethingbig format if anybody wants them for desktops or whatever.

Ok here are a few if my pics...and before everyone goes out ranting "oh god white balance is so off, its blurry...etc" I like to be experimental with a lot of my photos. I like showing movement...and using slow shutter speeds do just that. Some people like the look, some people hate it. Uhm...I have a whole online gallery if anyone is interested, but here goes for now. Most of these were shot in one day in chicago, some at my friends show....ill upload more later. Yeah i was thinking of something like that, but more of just the difference between the two than a message against overurbanization. I have another good idea of a picture that i wanna take as soon as I can. In a city not far from here there is a huge cooling tower (think cooling tower like on a nuclear reactor) and like not less than 300 feet from it sits a small playground. It just looks surreal, this small playground under the shadow of a cooling tower.....it's gonna be great
Christ C0v3r you get around...heh i hope to travel after i get through college, it'll be good stuff...I really like that pic in the art gallery with the large spherical light. It almost looks like a setting sun inside, really surreal....

This thread spawned off of another thread in which we just started posting some pics we took and had it as our backgrounds....they were merged, so the first post is different from the original first post on this thread.

what's most intriguing is how he managed to avoid any photons from himself appearing in the image, they're probably there, just very hard to see due to the intensity of the light drowning stuff out.
oracle
17-02-2004, 01:37 PM
Not really... Remember it's 3am, so it would have been considerably darker than photo appears. He said it was an 8 second exposure, so provided he keeps moving and doesn't stay still in one place for too long, the remaining exposure would drown out anything that was only there for a brief second.
I have taken several photos similar in technique.

Cool, that worked out alright. I use a Pentax Z-1 ex professional camera set up with numerous lenses. I'm partial to the larger zooms even for close up work.
I also use an old practica completely manual set-up. If you have one of their old cameras yourself bonus points for you! I know at least one of these pics was taken with the practica. I also know pics of pets are bloody annoying. All of my scenery and flower shots are on the old comp, I'll have to salvage the HD out and transfer the files to this comp. Oh and I only take pics of flowers I've grown myself lol

akruleZZ,
Hello there, I've been to Nepal a couple of times. November 2000 and November 2003. Annapurna, Chitwan, Pokhara and Kathmandu.
I've been very lucky and have travelled to many places in the world but I can truly say that Nepal is my favourite place in the world. You've been there so I dare say you know why people fall in love with it. The most stunning scenery in the world, the friendliness of the Nepalese people and the wonderful travellers you meet make it unbeatable.
I have three friends who have also travelled there and we all rave about the place.
Sorry timace, I'm not with the Nepalese tourist bureau but I don't mind giving them a free plug. Also, sorry for the hogging of the bandwidth but I've resized them before posting and hopefully they're worth the effort.

u r lucky to have been able to travel there liesurly it seems.
unfortunately when i was there (am pretty sure its about 3 times now) i was with my family of four, and only went there to extend our visa for India.
I have lived in India for many years (all the way down south) and before they changed the visas from 1yr to 6months we used to travel to Kathmandu.
Yes I agree with you, Nepal is one of the most beautifully stunning places in the world. if only the tourists wouldnt ruin it for travellers like us!
I really wish i cud have gone to pohkara etc. the last time i was there was when i was 15, i am 20 now :( but i plan to go back there, buy a lot of suvenirs now that i'm earning money! and take a lot of pictures, blow them up and hang them all over my walls!
did u have the chance to hike up the Himalayas? i went as far as about 14Km up the mountain from Gangotri. i'll scan some pics (pretty small :( ) and post them here next week.

constructive critisism, i dont know if it applys or not,can you adjust the ISO speed on the cyber shot? should put it as slow as possible. i cant tell if the grain on te image was the camera or some weird compression.. but yeh. which of course is not really critisism, more camera advice heh.
Id like to see a shot like this but with the background darker. the image is verging on too busy. but apart from that its really good, composition wise and lighting. sall good.

I'm pretty sure I can. What will that do? Fix the grainy look? I had the camera set at 5mega pixel recorded as a jpg then reduced the image size to 30%. Maybe thats causing it to look a bit odd.

Yeh,. with film, the higher the iso speed, the quicker the film reacts to light. so you need less light, but you lose quality. with digicams the CCD acts the same way. you can tell it to react really quickly to the light, which will give lots of noise, whereas if you make it as slow as possible. probably 100 or 200 iso. the quality will be higher. it may be the re-sizing though i guess. but if you can change the iso, take a shot and change the iso, take the exact same shot again with a slower/faster iso. and look at the images. you'lle be suprised how much difference it makes,.

I just do the point and click stuff. So sunlight. It could have done to have been a bit sharper/in focus but it's hard with macros.
It's great for natural light. I like to use the flash on my macros. But the lens casing blocks half the frame as is shown in the ant photo.

Actually I'm not sure if it was just sunlight, it might have flashed. I was reading about my camera the other other day (it's in the what camera have you got thread, there's about ten pages on it :D) and it said something about it automatically toning down the flash when it's in macro mode. Basically I just let it do it's shit and delete it if it's crap.

It's taken from the top of the Paekakariki Hill in Wellington, New Zealand. It's overlooking Paekakariki and Waikanae.
This is from November when I picked up a friend from the States and we went cruising around.

I also have one of a seal that I was about 5mtrs from. Not particularly a good idea considering the time of year for them but hey, I live life dangerously. I'm not sure if I have enough room with my limit though to upload that one so I'll have to post them to my site. :)

You can get the majority of the details directly from the photo (WindowsXP), if you save it to your computer then go in to the photos properties and hit the advanced button, it will come up with times/dates, exposure settings, type of camera used, focal points and all other types of settings..

This is the spiral staircase in one of the towers of the "Sagrada Familia" or "Family of God" cathedral in Barcelona.
Last one for now... this is an "Automated Chemist"
The downstairs is pretty small so what these guys do is have all the prescription meds upstairs..... but who wants to use stairs right?
When the people downstairs get in a script they punch in the details into a system and the bar you see in front of the meds moves up to the level and the meds pop out like a vending maching. It then moves them to a nearby conveyor belt and then they travel along to the spiral drop points where they slide down to the desk.
Depending on what desk the meds were ordered from depends on what slide is used. There were 3 all up.
I only wished I'd had a script on me :D

Muga.... That's amazing. Great photographic work!! rep ++ I'd be shitting my pants up there. How high are those guys?
I'd rep those guys if I could :D
They would be about the same height of the main AMP building in Sydney. It makes me wonder if they were working for like $3.20 an hour like most builders over there. They do show how strong a combination of bamboo and zip-ties are thats for sure..

Damm those good old cable ties
I went to Taronga yesterday and came back with some decent shots. I have entered one in to the photo comp, will post others once the comp has finished. This poor bugger was on watch in heats of 38+ degree temperatures while the rest of his mates had a sleep in the shade.

Seeing the January comp is over, here is the other photo I was going to enter in to it.. It's very similar to the one I put in there but yeah, was hard to decide between the two.. Or the Meer Kat above :D

Yeah, but they're just so darned cute! I'm still surprised Theo hasn't mauled Tabitha for trying to play with him while he's napping...

Imp, after seeing your pussies I thought I would post my pooch!
He's (or she's) so gorgeous :D My parents dog does the same thing. She has a sofa chair with a sheep skin rug on it she sleeps on (spoilt dog ;)) and she pops her head on the arm of it too.
Pets are so cute.

Here's a few of the dog next door. Lion cuts are the best thing ever! :D Her owners let her fur grow in winter but she looks so cute like this.
"That dogs got a puffy tail! Here puff!"
Took the dog down the beach today, he looked happy so I took some shots, nothing fancy - just my dog.

I caught this lucky shot from my hotel balcony at dawn. The sun was actually shining through another building. I'm no photographer as you might guess from the framing/lighting/focus but I was happy with how it turned out.

Just use a program like irfanview to resize them. If you're really concerned about size for posting online, roll them down to 640x480. Just hit Ctrl+R, select your size and press OK, then save the file. Easy.
banga
12-05-2005, 10:56 PM
mate i tried that program and when i resized it in the images/resize bit it looks real blocky not like the ones you post ??i tried it at 640x480 i think it was
Hey banga, download this program.
http://download.microsoft.com/download/whistler/Install/2/WXP/EN-US/ImageResizerPowertoySetup.exe
Once you have installed it, right click on the photo you want to resize and click on Resize pictures. It will display a menu for the size you want, click ok and it will create a small copy at the size you want.
Just make sure they are .jpg images - otherwise they may still be large.

Some shots from the Perth round of the V8 supercars (last weekend).
For those who are interested, these shots were all taken on a Canon 10D set to shutter priority at 1/320 (slow enough to show blur in the wheels and background), iso 200 to iso 400 giving an aperature between f/13 to f/9 (generally allows the car to be *all* in DOF). All shots are taken at 200mm, panned (to show blur in the background) and uncropped. I shot 535 shots over the weekend.

This was taken on Saturday. Funny story how I got it.
I got bored and so I decided to go for a walk. I had earlier gone to post some letters and I decided to go check out the river and there was a big bulldozer there that had been dredging the river.
So later on in the afternoon I went back with my camera and my iBook and my iSight and took some photos of it and test the video from the iSight. I decided to rock hop back home but just before I got home I went to grab my cellphone only to realise that I had dropped it somewhere on my walk.
So I went home, dropped off my cameras and iBook and grabbed my work cellphone. Armed with my work phone I retraced my steps and rang my phone but to no avail. But as I was backtracking I saw my phone lying face down in the sand.
Anyway I decided to just see where the path lead me to. Part of the track takes me to the waterhole where I have been nicked "Suicidal" because of a jump I do that looks like I'm incredibly close to the cliff but I'm not. Anyway I decided to take some photos using my work phone. As I was taking this photo I noticed that there was this huge black spot over the sun. Of course it's a result of the light being too bright for the lens but I thought it looked pretty cool, as though it was an eclipse.
The second photo was at the end of the track. I noticed an arrow sprayed on the ground and looked at where it was pointing. I thought it was pointing to a track used for orienteering but on looking I realised this could not have been the case. So I traced it and saw the dead rat. I guess the council had laid bait down or something.

I'll be going from Auckland to Hawke Bay next month, stopping at Rotorua on the way back. I hope to get some interesting shots with my new EOS 350D that I bought today :)
I got back to the office, and this rainbow appeared. Not bad for my first photo on the new camera (except for the reflection from the window.. not much you can do about that).

I didn't do anything tricky just seems to me like the lighting was in my favour.
