my suggestion is to go cable if you can. Only a few providers though, so your choice of weapon loadout is lessened.

You need to shop around and do the comparisons based on what you are looking for. There are a tremendous amount of DSL plans out.

If your primary goal is VPN to work (of course, since work is paying for it, that is your goal :D ) then you're better IMHO to get a synchronous connection (ie, where the download and the upload speeds are the same).
