I am looking for a alternative to Windows Explorer, preferably one that looks similar but has a few advantages, like twin (or triple) panes, the ability to turn the tree view on or off. And hopefully with an advanced copy and treesize tool.
I've tried Universal Explorer, Total Commander and a few others whose names elude me, none of them did exactly what I wanted.
Currently I typically have 2-6 windows open, and use treesize, and total copy to enhance them.

Have you tried 2x Explorer?
They have a really crappy website so it might be better to download it from the link below and try it out.

You could bring back windows 3.1 File manager. That thing was gold.

This is prolly a bit late for you, but have you tried Directory Opus (http://www.gpsoft.com.au/)?
(I think it started with DOpus for the Amiga).
Anyway, I found it pretty good, except that it was missing quick access to filters ala Universal Explorer.
Let me know how you go with you quest to find the UBER explorer...

Yeah, it is apparently a descendent of the noble old DOpus, even though it doesn't look anything like it ;)
I love the fact that you get so fucking many options. Mine's set up to open where i left it last time in a 2 window explorer. Not to mention the cool "double click on the desktop to start" majigger.
Handy.

They made a Windows version of it.
It sucked arse.
I doubt the rest (if they continued the line) would have been any better.
