Ok, so it's nearly the end of cricket season, but I'm watching it now (Sri Lanka vs Aus), so I thought I'd start a thread in the new sports forum. Anyhoo:

1. Murali-chucka-duran - I reckon he chucks it. No way anybody can get that much spin without using their elbow. Whatddya reckon?

2. Michael Clarke - I reckon he's good enough to be in the test squad. So why don't the selectors? What do you think?

3. Does anybody else just hate Sri Lanka as much as I do? I think its that fat prick Ranatunga that started it. Oh, and its not cos he's black either - it's cos he's a fat prick with a big mouth.

Oh, and if you don't like cricket - you should not have clicked this forum topic. It's pretty clear I think... :)

You're forgetting that Sri Lankan pitches are essentially sand paper, you can get the ball to turn at right angles without much effort

2. Michael Clarke - I reckon he's good enough to be in the test squad. So why don't the selectors? What do you think?
He's good, but he is no M Van Der Gun (http://aus.cricinfo.com/link_to_database/ARCHIVE/2002/OTHERS+ICC/NL_LOCAL/DERDEKL/HCC-4TH-XI_QHG-4TH-XI_DERDEKL-A_02JUN2002.html). Also who would you have him replace? The Australian batting line-up isn't exactly weak.

why is michael bevan in the one day side and not in the test match side?

thats one question i can't find an answer to....

yeh sure hes got a great one day average, since he never gets out, but whenever he plays he wastes about 2-3 overs getting into his 'rhythm'

he'd be such a great test player since he can always find the gaps and hit the occaisional boundary but i think he needs to be more agressive in one day cricket

guess it doesn't matter what i think though i'm not a selector

Bevan can't bat. Thats why he's not in the test side.

Yes, he can't bat. I remember when they tried him out in the test team a while ago. He couldn't face short bowling and got dropped cos of it.

Funny thing was - he has some talent with the ball (left arm wrist spin), and actually took some wickets in tests - but declared he didn't want to be an all rounder. I don't think he played another test match after that.

He and Martyn think they're a lot better than they are - fact is if you take Ponting, Hayden and Gilchrist out of the Australian batting line up - we'd be gettin' flogged silly.

Symonds and Clarke, too. They've saved us on many an occasion where as Martyn just gets out cheaply and Bevan gets others out with bad running.

I would love to see Andy Symmonds play Test matches over Boof Lehmann. Symmonds is a qaulity batsman, plus he can bowl just as well or even better than Lehmann, plus i know who i would want fielding for me!

I used to think that Clarke should play tests after steve waugh, but i now think he needs to wait a little while. He will one day be a great test and one day player.

Also, I can't wait for Warne and McGrath to be bowling together again for Australia.

I haven't seen much (any) of Clarke in test cricket. Wouldn't mind seeing what he's like, personally.

A little detour from the topic, Pagey, I see you're in Chatty. Should join us at The Willoughby tonight. Myself, Sambo, possibly others.

Australia had better get their team sorted out in time for their most challenging match ever (http://aus.cricinfo.com/db/NATIONAL/ICC/TOURNAMENTS/ICC_CHAMPIONS_TROPHY/fixtures.html) on September 13.

Clarke has not played a test yet, but the reason why he was not selected to tour Sri Lanka is because Sri Lanka is not really the best place for a young, inexperienced cricketer to be making their debut. I think that he will make his debut in the next AU home series where he has a bit more support to ensure that he makes the transition more easily.

In any case, Symo is deserving of his spot at the present time.

Hooray! - Shane Warne is back - and cricket is all the better for it. 5/116 is a pretty darn good effort in his first test match back I say.

Take that Stuart 'I'm Better than Warnie' MacGill. 1/68 - I don't think so. It's about time MacGill realized nobody likes him and he should piss of back to first class cricket!

You forgot his test batting record:

18 Matches ; 30 Inns ; 785 Runs ; HS 91 ; Avg 29.07 ; Strike Rate 39.80

First class cricket is a lot different to Test cricket - I remember that Bevan looked bloody ordinary at the top level in tests - which is reflected in his average and strike rate.

I used to be a huge fan of Bevan, but I've seen the light and realise his suckiness. His weakness to the short ball is well known. You should've seen him when he had a go at test level. Everyone knows his weakness and they will pelt him with short stuff constantly. Bevan is left there on the crease ducking randomly and jumping all over the place.

In the one-dayers, it seems like he plays test match style during the limited over matches. Every other batter knows that they don't have forever to make runs, but Bevo will take ages to get settled in. When he finally gets comfy, he scores at a very slow pace.

He's only got such a high average because of the not-outs hes managed by blocking the whole game.

The Nine commentators reckon he's one of the best between the wickets but he's horrible! Yeah, he may be fast, but his overconfidence in his speed causes lots of runouts on the other end of the pitch.

He's also shit in the field. He's got the weakest arm in the squad.

I guess he deserves his place in the team because his slow batting style helps to slow down the loss of wickets when things get bad, but his numbers are VERY misleading.

The greatest record in sport. Fifty-something tinnies in a flight between England and Australia. Fuck, I wouldn't be able to manage that within a week :barf:
