I was just reading a rather interesting article (http://australianit.news.com.au/articles/0,7204,8901975%5E15302%5E%5Enbv%5E,00.html) about how spamming methods have changed over time and how they're now utilising the virus writers of the world. This is the first time I've seen anyone talk about the software the spammers actually put on the infected computers or seen one of the programs named.
Does anyone know any more about these programs or have any sites that could give me more information? Everything I see stops short of talking about it, simply discusses the virus, makes a statement along the lines of these viruses being used by the spammers or opening ports for the spammers, and stops there. I'd love to get more information about the actual spamming software.
My home computer was compromised a few months back - it's behind a linux firewall / NAT router, never had a virus and always been one week late at MOST in patches. I only found out when I got a bounceback message and it had some details of my computer in the headers (ie, computer name and stuff). I'd love to know what to look for as far as these programs go. I cleaned out my machine as much as I could, but was left with no idea whether it worked or not as I couldn't find anything that appeared all that unusual.
