I fucking hate sun's JVM engine. I want it gone.
I have installed microsoft's far superior version (they may have ripped it off but at least it worked properly ffs) but like all shithouse software, Sun is so convinced that it's ball-licking applet is the best thing ever that you couldn't possibly want to get rid of it. As such I need someone to advise me how I may go about doing this, because no matter what I try it keeps resetting itself as the default.
My not particularly helpful information is that I've heard it's damn near impossible... Something to do with registry entries, you may want to have a look there.

*sigh* I figured as much...since this is a work pc I don't have permissions to do that kind of stuff...will have to talk to my friendly network admin.
This is just what I heard when I asked a customer to install the latest java on his machine. He said the last time he did it some of the programs he had to use didn't work and he couldn't get rid of that java version.
In the end he went with a reinstall...

I'd do some research on it for you, but you haven't even provided basic info like the OS you're using. You said you installed Microsoft VM, but you didn't say whether your permissions allowed you to actually uninstall Java's VM.
Read the "Read me!: Before posting: Forum Guidelines" post at the top of the Software subforum thread, give us some useful information, and I'll see what I can do for you.
Help us and we'll help you.

XP professional.
The thing is I don't even know if I have permissions because I can't find anything that resembles an uninstall function...that's my question - IS there a (relatively) straightforward way to do it? From what I've seen so far, the answer is no...
As far as workgroup stuff in the office goes, no I don't have priveleges to alter the registry but I'm friends with the network admin guy so that stuff won't be a problem...I just need to be able to give him a clue what to do because he's as in the dark as I am on this particular topic.

I have Java 2 Runtime environment, SE v1.4.2_04 uninstall entry in my Add/Remove programs. Is that the same thing? Only installed it the other day, haven't really noticed it so far.

Possibly the first attempted uninstall removed it from the add/remove programs list, but due to you not having enough permissions to the registry et al, it didn't remove it properly hence your problems (I've had that before). Maybe login under an account with higher access rights, re-install and then remove?
