in win98 on my old laptop someone tried to update the ie to version 6.0 and now whenever i boot the machine up it will say explorer has performed an illegal operation and will need to be closed, the process repeats infinitly until i shut the machine down and boot it up into safe mode.
once in safe mode it will work fine, but there is no internet or networking functionabiliy because of safe mode.
is there anyway i can fix this without having to re-install windows??
p.s im writing this on my server which is connected to my tv monitor so if there any spelling mistakes, sorry.

There are sites around that have details on how to get rid of IE completely on windows 95 and 98, and there is some software that'll do it automagically for you - that probably being the best way to go. After that's sorted you can go ahead and INSTALL A BETTER BROWSER (http://www.mozilla.org). Honestly, using IE, what are you thinking?! Case of the crazies is what you have there.

Why yes, install Linucks.

You might be able to replace explorer.exe with a known-good copy from someone else's win98 install. win9x is shit, i recommend upgrading. I think win2k lets you do an upgrade to your current installation so you don' lose most things, XP certainly does let you. I prefer win2k. Anyway, if you can get your hands on a good explorer.exe, you'll have to boot to MS-DOS prompt (no not the one inside windows) and replace it there. I know your current one is dead, but keep a backup just in case the new one makes things worse :)

For the time it takes to rebuild a windows machine it's really not worth fucking about, and replacing explorer.exe wouldn't do anything to help.
As for using a different browser, that's a really nice idea except I don't think there's a version of lynx or any other communist browser that can replace the entire windows explorer shell.

There are plenty of replacement shells. I used one a while ago but it sucked... although it didn't show up on my Google search for "replacement windows shell" (no quotes) (http://www.google.com.au/search?q=replacement%20windows%20shell). I found one called Aston Shell (http://www.astonshell.com/) which looks OK. I haven't tried it, but it claims to be good.

Just suggesting a different one because since hazza was trying to update the thing it probably means that he's using it as his main browser, which as we all know is very very crazy. I mean I don't see any other reason you'd want to update it unless you really needed to because of sec. holes, and you'd have to be using it frequently to be effected by them anyway.

But he's talking about explorer, not IE.

Ok, turns out I didn't read the first post properly. I think I'll shut up about browsers now. :p

For future reference, chances are that removing all IE files with IEradicator (http://www.litepc.com/ieradicator.html) would have fixed the problem without having to perform a reinstall. I doubt that the problem was actually with the explorer.exe or it wouldn't have worked in Safe Mode. Explorer.exe was probably just having a conflict with the botched IE install, seeing as how they are so closely linked these days. After running IEradicator you could then just reinstall a fresh copy of any version of IE and problem solved. Below is a brief description of what IEradicator does for those who couldn't be assed visiting the website.
IEradicator is a tiny, script that uses the Windows setup engine to surgically remove Internet Explorer versions 3 through 6.0 from Windows 95, Windows 98, Windows 98 Second Edition, Windows Millennium and Windows 2000(sr1). Note: Not for use with Windows 2000sr2 or Windows XP.
The removal process is elegant with all COM servers politely being asked to de-register themselves from the system registry using their inbuilt deinstallation routines before being eliminated from the hard disk. IEradicator then pulls out the cleaning gear and gives the registry a good polish before returning control back to you. The MS HTML Engine (shdocvw.dll and mshtml.dll) is left on the machine to provide needed functionality for other applications that render HMTL (e.g. Outlook Express) or that launch a mini-browsing window (e.g. Winamp's Mini Browser, Netmeeting's Online Directory).Check it out if you're running any of the above OSs and you have problems with IE or an IE update fucks up. It works really nicely.
