Anyone running cygwin here along with KDE/GNOME?

I've used the Cygwin X server to access GNOME and KDE sessions running on a remote machine before (using XDMCP).
Haven't gone as far as running GNOME or KDE themselves just on Cygwin, though.

- I only have 1 PC at work
- main dev apps only run on Windoze
- need to do work on Unix boxes at the same time as development
- KDE would beat multiple telnet/ssh sessions (well I'm hoping it would)

If you have X installed on the box where you ssh to (no telnet please), you could try a program such as WinaXe (http://www.labf.com/winaxe/index.html) to get it showing on your Windows box. I sometimes use it at work to start up Mathematica from the university network.
If that's enough it should save you some effort. Btw wouldn't you still have to ssh from your Cygwin/KDE environment to the other box(es) to get anything done on them?

Yeah this place is really into security NOT… It has taken them over a year to even to consider ssh – we might be using it in a few months!!! And, check this out – we have one UNIX user account for all developers – but luckily everyone here is a professional and behaves.

I tried a few free windows X servers and found them to be buggy – sessions would close for no reason – and the good ones cost $$. This place won’t pay, thus I am looking at Cygwin/KDE to see if it will serve my purpose.

Yes, I still would have to telnet/ssh from Cygwin/KDE to the other boxes – I’m hoping that the GUI would allow me to have all my UNIX related stuff in one place, and make managing all the UNIX related windows easier on my Desktop. Scrolling up and down through numerous taskbar lists is becoming a real pain.
