Hi all,

My questions are: What is the best method for putting labels on cat5 patch cables? NB: These cables already have the RJ45 connectors on both ends.
Any suggestions on a good labelling scheme?
Any other suggestions of useful things to do to maintain the patch panel?
I am in the process of cleaning up the patch panels at work, and I need a method of labelling each cable.

I'm thinking of doing something very simple for keeping a record of the patches: Label each patch cable at both ends with a single number, suffixed by an "X" if the patch cable is a crossover
Keep an exercise book in each room which records the source, destination and patch cable number for each patch.Strange as it might seem, I'd like to avoid an electronic solution, since I've usually had to look these things up when the network is borked and our main systems are down.

Brother P.touch and a number/letter combination system.

I.E cable 1A, cable 1B, cable 1C, then bundle 1A to 1Z together in a bundle of 26 cables and move on to 2A, 2B and bundle all the 2's together, repeat as required.

Make sense?

Thanks for the suggestion.

P.touch is OK, but I find that it doesn't stay "stuck" to itself or to the cables (i.e. it peels off after a while).

Any suggestions on ways to make it stay on? Is there such a thing as transparent electrical insulating tape? (i.e. the plastic variety, not the cellophane sort).

probs get hot at the back of a cable termination point so the glue melts..... what about some kind of cabletie with a built in card/writy ony bit? like they put on suitcases at the airport?
