Can anybody suggest where I could find some good, free, virus protection software?

nod32 is nice but you only get 1 month free trial period.
http://www.nod32.com.au/
http://housecall.antivirus.com/
is a good online scanner.

AVG (http://www.grisoft.com/us/us_index.php) is pretty good, and it's free.
I'm not allowed to put the computer on the network, we already know its riddled with virus's but I dont have any means with which to remove them. I tried to download nod, but something I believe internal to our network prevented it, and the network admin guy does not come in on fridays.

Do you have a USB HDD? Or can you burn something to a CD?
How about I call sick. You fly my ass out there and i fix it.
:)
I can burn CD's
I cant fly your ass up here
This is a pain, its not even a work PC, just one of the managers who fucked up their home PC bringing it in to get us slaves to fix it for him.

d/l the Antivirus to a diff PC. stick it on the cd and try installing it.
The Virus may be doing stuff to block off antivirus sites etc. So make sure you grab an antivirus that can scan before install.
i THINK nod32 does this. Or try and find a Norton's AV demo/trial thing cos i know they do it.

Reinstall Windows
Tell manager the virus got everything
...but maybe I'm a nasty person...
Normally that would be my solution too, but of course, they cant possibly afford to lose any of their files, otherwise the world will come to an end at midnight.
After much hard work, I have managed to get AVG to work, and I now think / hope the computer is virus free.
Now I'm off to ask for a pay rise.

woah woah woah, your already too far down the track.
When this scenario happens it is important to make the manager aware of the fact that his machine has a virus on it, if said virus was to make it to the network it would be disasterous for the company, as this particular virus has a payload that corrupts excel documents.
Now explain that even having the machine in the building constitutes a huge security risk, advise him that you can still fix the problem for him, but if anything escapes of that machine that you cant take responsiblity for it or the damage it causes.
If he is still foolhardy enough to ask you to do it, then goto the windows directory and start deleting things randomly. Sooner or later the machine will end up in a blue screen of death. At this point dont do anything till the manager comes back to check up on it. When he approaches simply say "gotta stop it before it takes the core....damn."
By now the manager will be able to see the blue screen of death mix in a healthy dose of swearing, now this is the most important part, turn and face him and shake your head ever so slowly.
At this point tell him theres nothing to do but format it, if he can bring in the disks tomorrow you can look at it, if <insert project> doesnt get in the way.
When you finally do rebuild his machine he will be so happy that the damn thing works at all he wont care that you saved nothing.

Drakin. Amazing response. Is that from Dilbert or the BSOFH (bastard sys-op from hell)?
