make sure they both have network cards, then get a crossover cable and connect them up.
make sure your drives are set to share and name the share, then at a run command type
\\'computer name'\'name of share'
you may want to turn on internet sharing and turn off firewalls.

more suggestions:
it helps network browse if both computers are in the same workgroup
turn off dns and set up similiar static ip addresses, a.b.c.x - where x is unique - if network browsing fails, you can always map manually with the address
set up the same netmask for both machines - in theory it shouldnt make a different, but i tend to do it anyway.
(put your left foot in, take you left foot out ....)

Might wanna try this link if you're still having a problem.

Let Pirate know if it works... he'll be greatful for the feedback... and I can't believe he didn't post the link himself. :D
Good luck. :)
Slight nitpick with that article:
Make sure your switch is a 100 megabyte switch
I thought it was megabit - as 100Mb != ability to transfer cd image from computer to computer in 6 seconds. (would be nice though :p)
Otherwise, pretty sound advice.

Another nitpick: a switch might be a bit overkill for a home network. Usually a hub will do and will be a lot cheaper. And yes h3@ven53nt, it is megabits per second, an 8-fold difference to bytes.
Not that "rednecks" :p need to be concerned about those details, any shopkeeper worth his salt should be able to recommend the right device.

I've always recommended a switch to customers if they can afford it. The few extra bucks are worth it.

That's good to know. I wasn't aware that the prices are so close now (there's about 2-fold difference in € for a 5 port hub/switch here). I sit corrected because I cbf standing at work.
